I know he was popular, but I always had a real problem with Alan Wright as a player.

What were your issues?

I thought he was shit.

I overlooked it when you slagged off RHCP, I took it in good humour when you dismissed U2, but don't ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER insult Alan Wright.

If you do, that sex session we arranged will not be happening.

This is turning into the dark days of Fergal and Bourne.

It's a brave call but I'll back you up by saying though I liked him, I always felt we could've been better in that position

Thirded. Very over rated on here.

Fourthed.

Sorry, I thought Wright was brilliant....or at least very decent.

Im sure i read a story that when at Villa he was advised to bin his Ferrari he bought himself as the stiff clutch and gearing of the Ferrari was causing muscle issues on his little legs

Poor bugger

I really liked the bloke, was incredibly good at beating players twice his height in the air and scored a couple of crackers

Well he certainly wasn't crap. Virtually an ever present in the years we finished 4th and 5th and won the League Cup and then for several years after that when I don't think a Villa side with him in it finished lower than 8th.

Also the first player's name I ever had on the back of a Villa shirt - The 95-96 away.

I don't know why I chose Wright. Trying to be different as a 13 year old, I guess :)

I think Wright had 2 things in his favour, 1 was his size, if he'd been 6ft his reputation would be very different.

The other is that once Charles got his horrible injury we went through a bunch of pretty average right backs (and seemed to change them every season) until Delaney came in which made the left side always feel so much more secure.

Wasn't overly impressed with him when he signed towards the back end of 94/95. Felt he was an obvious weakspot with his height and sides were targetting him accordingly.

He was a different player in a 5/3 at the back from 95/96 onwards.

Good memories of that Savo and Draper side that developed under Little and he was a key part of a new way of playing.

I had a weird problem with bald people when I was a late-teenager/early-20s. That could be it. If you could see me now, you'd be in no doubt that karma continues to exist, and indeed thrive.

He came into a struggling side that was fighting relegation.  Played his part in us staying up, and then helped us really kick on after that. We have had some truly abysmal left backs at Villa over the years, so to say that he was crap seems like mild insanity to me to be honest!

As a fellow member of the vertically challenged club, I loved him to bits.

Scored a couple of absolute worldies too. Wand of a left foot!

Exactly. What a season and what a side. Almost worthy of mention alongside 76/7 and 80-82 and every bit as much fun as 89/90 and 92/3.

I'm struggling to grasp why there'd be any bad words about Alan Wright. We could only have got better if one of maybe half a dozen absolutely top class players worldwide had decided they wanted to nearly win something in Aston. Disliking Wright is like an extreme version of today's "not good enough for where we fantasise being". You wouldn't need to draft in another hand to count on your fingers the number of better left backs at the time.

I used to love him, but I can understand why some might find short, bald people somewhat sinister.
