I like Mings as a person. And as a footballer he has a lot of qualities.

However, one of his worst qualities is his composure. And the way Emery seems to want to play, we need composure at the back.

So unless Mings has agreed to be a backup, or the contract extension is just so we can get some decent money for hum when he is sold, this contract extension is a mistake.

For me, we need to start rebuilding the squad from the back. Its probably one of the most important areas if the manager wants to play out from the back. The current lot simply cannot do it because they lack the qualities needed to do the job well.

Delighted for him, a key part of our revival. Kept his counsel after all that rubbish Gerrard kicked off in the summer and now has got his reward.

Pleased for Tyrone. He is one of the reasons we have stayed up since promotion and he is also the reason why we have not progressed. With Carlos back soon he will provide a strong option from the bnch next season.
Absolute nonsense.  I take it you haven't seen the stats?

He'll be playing alongside Carlos next season.

The stats are pretty meaningless without context though. Generally when he's not played, the back ups have either been Hause or Chambers. Hause is a big immobile carthorse, and Chambers is just rubbish. What the stat really tells you is that we haven't invested sufficiently since we've been back in the Premier League to make sure we've got adequate back ups. Good for him on getting his new contract, but he's been the mainstay of a team that's never finished higher than 11th. If we want to improve on that, then at the very least we need some better central defenders to challenge him for the position.

Delighted for him and delighted for us too.  His pros outweigh the cons.

You can still have a balance. If it's not Mings forte then it's up to the next guy to be a pass master and aside from a simple sideways one to the fullback Konsa certainly isn't.

I think it's a case of hopefully getting 8-10 games out of Mings-Carlos as a combination from April, seeing how that looks versus variety of teams and then looking again in the summer.

I would have been looking to upgrade upon him come the summer. Would have been a good time to move him on.

11th in the Prem is far better than where he started with us, 10th in the Championship. I think he has played a good part in that progress. I would rather him than Elphick, Samba, Tanzebe, Chester, Richards, Hause and an ageing Terry.

The need to have players to challenge him for his place should be a given not just for him but for all 11 starting places. That we have generally failed to do that all over the pitch since 2019 says where we have been as a club.

I'm glad he's signed an extension. A decent player and, if Risso get's his wish, a decent starting point to improve the defence over the next year or two.

Congratulations to Big T.

I think the pros outweighing the cons as posted above sums it up nicely.

If it is three and a half years as Gregg Evans says, that seems like a long old extension. He'll be 33 by then. Surely Emery's style is going to be different to a "blood and thunder" typical physical British centre half? For all his qualities Mings isn't much of a ball player.

I guess at least when it's time to sell we may get a fee for him.
