I like having good guys representing our club, and Tyrone is one of the best around. He's also one of the better defenders in the league, which is an added bonus.

Odd how there doesn't seem to be any mention of the length of the contract, but this is without doubt good news. All part of the effort to build a proper squad - have a feeling there is plenty more going on behind the scenes.

The wretched results Aston Villa always suffer when Tyrone Mings is absent should serve as a reminder of the centre-back’s importance to the team.

Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City, which would have been even worse if it weren’t for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez making a number of fine saves, was the latest instalment in a predictable story that unfolds whenever Mings is sidelined by injury.

The three Premier League games he has missed this season (Bournemouth away on August 6; West Ham at home on August 28; Manchester City away on February 12) have all ended in defeats.

Villa have won just one of the 12 league games the 29-year-old hasn’t started since signing on a permanent deal from Bournemouth for around £20million ($24.3m) in the summer of 2019. That was a 1-0 victory over Norwich in December 2019. This means the club have failed to win any of their last nine Premier League games without the England international in the starting line-up.

So it was no surprise there were shudders of despair when the team news confirming Mings’ absence owing to a thigh injury was announced an hour before kick-off at the Etihad Stadium. The fact Villa then found themselves 3-0 down at half-time was hardly a shock.

Unai Emery described that first-half performance as the worst since he took charge. And while City are a brilliant attacking team, there is no hiding from the reality that Villa struggling without Mings is becoming an unwelcome theme.

Mings is a vocal presence who organises the side, throws his body on the line, and whose pace protects the backline against quick attackers. He also regularly wins the ball when defending set pieces.

Garry Thompson, who watches Villa every week as a co-commentator for BBC Radio WM and played for the club as a forward from 1986 to 1988 agrees, saying: “When Mings is out of the team, there is a massive hole. He’s one of Villa’s strongest leaders. We need him in there alongside Martinez and Ashley Young because without him it’s a quiet team.

“No doubt the manager will want to freshen things up in the summer, but for now we need Mings in there because he’s the best we have.”

That’s not to say Mings is the answer to everything. In the 123 Premier League games he has started for Villa, Mings has lost more than he has won. His record reads: won 45, drawn 23 and lost 55.

Regardless of this, Mings has put in plenty more good performances than bad ones and has been excellent value for money. And failing to win 11 of the 12 league games he has missed is an issue Villa urgently need to address.

An injury to centre-back Diego Carlos, a £26million summer signing from Sevilla, has not helped matters. The Brazilian played the first two games of the season — first instead of Mings, then alongside him — as then-manager Steven Gerrard considered mixing up the centre-half partnership. Carlos ruptured his Achilles in the second of those games (the 2-1 home win over Everton) and has been out ever since.

There is some positive news on that front as Carlos, who turns 30 next month, is set to train with the first team later this week as he continues the final stages of his recovery. He has been using some of his spare time to sharpen up his English and Villa envision him becoming a big presence in the team when he’s back.

Emery says: “He has a good mentality and he’s a winner. Progressively he will help us and he will play as soon as possible, but first we have to build up his confidence and keep him fit.”

Mings, meanwhile, will be checked over later in the week to see if he is ready for Saturday’s game against Arsenal. In the past, he has played on despite carrying niggling injuries. He was unable to do that for the City match.

There are 15 months remaining on Mings’ contract and conversations about his future could begin in the summer. For now, though, getting him back on the pitch is all that matters because Villa have a better chance of winning games when he is available.

I'm happy to keep him around. Of course he isn't perfect and makes errors but you also have to value the leadership he brings.

Without him we start conceding cheap goals from set pieces and are generally all over the place in terms of organisation as no one else there really talks.

And I'm an open lines of inquiry on what may have happened with an injury

In spite of the fact that a team will occasionally have to claim a player is injured in the reporting the reality maybe different. His agent or advisors would be the ones to advise him not to play until he receives a new contract. Mings is too honorable a guy to carry out that task himself as he would want to play. Sticking with the negotiating contract theories even the manager or owner can be told to player to "sit this one out"

Maybe this didn't happen with Mings and it was just a coincidence that he got a new contract, but it does goes on in football. So I'm just making that point. Mings himself opting not to play is the least likely scenario, but owners and advisors getting involved is what I'm saying can happen. I'm not saying it did. And, of course, players get injured, so this situation could be straightforward.

Naturally, the focus is on the good news of a new contract.
