Apparently Unai likes to put the captaincy to an anonymous player vote, which is probably the best way to do it so no one is pissed off

That sounds a bit weak to me.

Martinez is likeliest to start every game and is a leader on the pitch, so let him keep it I reckon.

Not necessarily weak, but it might prove a bit awkward if they vote for Sanson.

I'm with Smith on this, you don't need an armband to be a leader on the pitch so the choice of captain is given far too much weight. Gerrard made it much more important than he needed to and it backfired on him massively.

For now I'd leave it with Emi.

I'm sure before he came to us that Smith had a rotating model with the captaincy and changed it each game. That obviously changed to try and keep the rat, then to boost Mings. Gerrard was just a knob with it.

Martinez for me is the only guaranteed starter in our squad though I'm a bit reticent to give it to a 'keeper because captains usually get more leeway to chat to the ref and you need your goalie to stay where he is.

I think letting the players elect who leads them on the pitch is a good idea personally. Same with the penalty taker for that matter.

I don't, it should definitely be the manager's choice.

As Dennis Mortimer put it, the captain's job is to toss a coin and pick up trophies.

Though hasn't he revelled in it since. And who can blame him.

I think the way he carries himself shows it, don't you?

He is what he is. There's probably a bit of residual bitterness for not getting the recognition he and his team deserve but I love the way he's never bothered about being diplomatic. There's not enough arseyness these days.

Like I say, that's the way he carries himself. He was captain of the Villa team that won the League and the European Cup. Doesn't get much better than that.

Regarding his view of all that a captain does, I think that may be correct for a very, very small number of teams; where all the players are leaders, know their role in the team and execute it well. Just look at the team he was captain of. Gut feeling says it was easy being captain in 1980-81 because the personnel never changed and the manager got everyone playing well.

These days we need our captain to lead from the front, demand more of players and the referee. There are quite a few examples of captains who have pushed their team on to much aplomb.

also everything is way more public than ever before. Everything you do is scrutinized. And as a black man with strong societal and politcal positions he attracts more attention. Even if he represents those off field issues incredibly well. Tyrone is a very visible captain. Back in the day you could just focus on the team.
