It does appear that Mings is considered a figure of derision by other fans. Some randomer in the pub on Sunday asked me who my favourite Villa player was (he must have mistook me for a nine year old). I struggled for an answer but he said "definitely not Mings though" with a grin. I replied that I think he's great and that ended that exchange pretty promptly. It seemed he was wanting me to join in the slagging off, which was a bit weird but Brackley would have been all over it I'm sure.

FWIW, I thought that Mings was just about the one Villa player who came out of the Newcastle game having given anything like a decent performance.

Yep same here. When he's not making mistakes his all round play is usually pretty good. He's got all the attributes needed to be a great, it's just that his concentration and mistakes let him down.

Was very much safety first from him though. Against a very average team he booted away a lot of possession under little pressure. Not all his fault obviously with our midfield hiding and the ball bouncing off Watkins every time he went direct.

Mings is a mid table standard CB playing in a mid table team for me. I think this is his level to be honest. Which is a decent achievement from a guy who was a backup CB at Bournemouth not too long ago.

Fixed that, I think too many people forget that he was considered a left back who could cover CB until he came to us on loan.

He's not good enough to be a top 8 centre half. He lacks consistency, often over 90 minutes, never mind week to week.

He costs us a lot of goals with his errors. Concentration is a big issue I think, but it often takes serious cock up for him to revert to basics.

He was abysmal against Leeds, but solid against Newcastle making an excellent tackle on Saint-Maximin.

Targett is a case in point. He was excellent at times last year, but he has a ceiling. We have too many players who aren't top quality or if they are, not consistently enough. Mings is in that bracket.

I think the problem both Mings and Konsa have is that whereas under Smith both full backs played well inside the middle of the pitch alongside the centre backs whereas nowadays the full backs are half way or more down the pitch, leaving a large gap behind them.  Neither seem exactly sure whether they should now cover across to mark that area when the ball is there or if they should wait to see if a midfielder will drop in there. This seems to me to be a cause of uncertainty between them and needs to be worked on so they each know what areas are covered and by whom.

Yeah, I agree.  If you take last season - particularly the first half of it - then you'd be hard pressed to find a more solid defensive unit than Martinez-Cash-Konsa-Mings-Targett.

The big difference this season - under both Smith & Gerrard - has been that we've been playing Cash & Targett/Digne as wingbacks.  Konsa & Mings are doing far more work than they were doing, and consequently mistakes have started to creep in.  In early-Gerrard era, we had Marv who did a fine job of covering the extra work.

I'm convinced either reverting to something more like a flat back 4, or getting a Marv-or-better level defensive midfielder would sort the problem out pretty quickly.

If he's not good enough as a top 8 CB I raise you John Stones....

i've noticed the same, he seems to have become the modern day Titus Bramble to all opposing fans, but who cares as long as he is doing the job well for us (therein lies the problem)
like ads says he's not a traditional top 6 class centre half, but then there's not a lot who are and he's as good as most other CB in the prem when he's on his game

I'm constantly getting texts from supporters of other clubs who watch our televised games and tell me he's a liability. I normally reply that the good usually outweighs the bad. Against Leeds it wouldn't have been so bad to have on centre back not at the races but on that day to have two was a disaster. Mings was.much better vs The Toon and arguably our best player on the day although he didn't have much competition.

I want more from Mings; I want more from all of them. They're all too inconsistent. If we're ever to make it and stay in the top 6 then Mings, amongst others will need to improve a lot to stay in that team.
