Yep same here. When he's not making mistakes his all round play is usually pretty good. He's got all the attributes needed to be a great, it's just that his concentration and mistakes let him down.

Against a very average team he booted away a lot of possession under little pressure. Not all his fault obviously with our midfield hiding and the ball bouncing off Watkins every time he went direct. Mings is a mid table standard CB playing in a mid table team for me. I think this is his level to be honest. Which is a decent achievement from a guy who was a backup CB Leftback at Bournemouth not too long ago.
I think the problem both Mings and Konsa have is that whereas under Smith both full backs played well inside the middle of the pitch alongside the centre backs whereas nowadays the full backs are half way or more down the pitch, leaving a large gap behind them. Neither seem exactly sure whether they should now cover across to mark that area when the ball is there or if they should wait to see if a midfielder will drop in there. This seems to me to be a cause of uncertainty between them and needs to be worked on so they each know what areas are covered and by whom.
He's not good enough to be a top 8 centre half. He lacks consistency, often over 90 minutes, never mind week to week.He costs us a lot of goals with his errors. Concentration is a big issue I think, but it often takes serious cock up for him to revert to basics. He was abysmal against Leeds, but solid against Newcastle making an excellent tackle on Saint-Maximin.Targett is a case in point. He was excellent at times last year, but he has a ceiling. We have too many players who aren't top quality or if they are, not consistently enough. Mings is in that bracket.

This is beginning to sound like a Man Utd forum
It does appear that Mings is considered a figure of derision by other fans. Some randomer in the pub on Sunday asked me who my favourite Villa player was (he must have mistook me for a nine year old). I struggled for an answer but he said "definitely not Mings though" with a grin. I replied that I think he's great and that ended that exchange pretty promptly. It seemed he was wanting me to join in the slagging off, which was a bit weird but Brackley would have been all over it I'm sure.
