This is a good analysis of the defending on Wednesday night. In short, yes our defence were pulled all over the shop, but the problem starts in midfield.

Here’s a fact for you.

Tyrone Mings has committed more errors leading to opposition goals than any other outfield player in the past 3 Premier League seasons.
I think that pretty much settles the argument.

No it doesn’t. What a bullshit stat.
Firstly - that title is always going to be held by a central defender because they are the ones whose job is to be in the position to make that mistake.
Secondly, if this is across the whole division (the sentence doesn’t actually make that clear as it seats premier league seasons not teams), then it also points to what players around him are doing. Maybe we can look at how often he is left in a position to NEED to clear a ball, or not have any options to clear a ball. Errors don’t happen in isolation. We’ve had a worryingly leaky defensive midfield for 3 seasons, & full backs trying to be wingbacks & not always managing it, & a defensive partner who seems to manage to look amazing alongside Tyrone Mings, but strangely inept when he’s not there.

Well you know what they say about statistics ;)

The stat is from whoscored.com and they quote 4 goals directly resulting from a Mings error over the past 3 seasons.

Yes, and it boils down to what we can all see. No proper defensive midfielder, and Luiz and McGinn doing a poor job protecting the defence.

I wish he would just stop being so laxadaisical around the box and just treat what ever he faces in front of him with more urgency. For some reason he seems to think he is some sort of cultered ball player when it is quite clear he is not.

He should just play the way he is told to play for England and just concertrate on playing his own position and not to worry about others and then maybe he would be more focused on his own game.

Is the added burden of being club captain part of the issue?

Martinez is brilliant but I’m sure I could think of three goals he could of stopped but for brain farts. That’s in less time as well.

Mings headed one off the line the other night as well but I suppose that doesn’t go into the stats.

I know. I’d say Mings has helped us win more points than he has given away and helped us to get to where we are today since he’s arrived.

The criticism I get sometimes, it’s the anger along with the criticism he seems to attract more than anyone else, which I really don’t get.

I know why, and you do too.

The Leeds fans the other night. How many shite centre halves have happily plied their trade in the top flight down the years? I don't recall Richard Stearman, for example, getting serenaded in such a way.

An eloquant black man who is unafraid of speaking his mind and calling out issues is a threat to these ignorant, reactionary pricks.

Perhaps...if it was Harry Maguire I suspect it would have been the exact same though. High profile players always get slagged off more, look at the grief Grealish gets at every away ground. Konsa was having a stinker but wasn't getting serenaded. It's far too easy to throw out the racist angle.

Mings unlike some of the others mentioned, let's things get to him during a game. It's a chink in his temperament. Bamford, Wellbeck, Zaha and Joelinton last season, he hates getting rattled physically or mentally by opposition forwards. The Leeds fans the other night definitely got to him too. After a bad mistake for the first, the smart thing is to settle things down and try sort out with Konsa how to stop the might of Dan James. Let others do the ball playing. Mings did the exact opposite.

I think what was unfortunate for Mings is the interview before the game. As sometimes happens he went out to have a stinker afterwards and the Leeds fans were obviously loving it. Good thing for him is that Saturday is a chance to put things right.

The fans and the team targeted Mings because they know it works.
