And even Van Dyck isn't immune to the odd stinker - 7-2 anyone?

He takes on the most responsibility in the team as captain and figurehead. This leads him trying to do the work of multiple players at times. For England, when he's not been the dominant centre-back, he hasn't put a foot wrong. Konsa makes less rickets (although that was his second dumb red card of the season last night) because he takes less risk. He never distributes from the back, playing the ball square to Mings who either pings it forward or goes on a foray himself - which he's actually getting pretty good at.

I used to be more highly critical of Mings and his clangers but its really blinkered to say he was responsible for the three goals last night. He stands up while St McGinn and Little Luiz give bugger-all protection in front of him. The type of player that teammates love having and miss badly when he's not around. My preference would be for us to get in a genuine top-class centre back who can play on the left or right, and that Mings can look up to.

With Mings, I see two sides to his play. His natural game is to be relaxed, taking the odd risk, comfortable in possession and positive. However this does lead to the odd clanger, which when it happens seems to trigger a spell of him being ultra cautious, hammering clearances out of play under minimal pressure and taking no chances whatsoever. Last night he started in normal mode but after the first goal he switched. Look at the third goal, I reckon 9 times out of 10 he takes a touch then boots it clear, but because he was in panic mode he tried to clear it first time and messed it up.

The problem with this is it can lead to both types of clangers in quick succession, which we saw in the game last night. As others have said, he doesn't hide and you have to respect that, and at least you can see him trying to do the right thing even if it doesn't come off. But there is a fundamental issue there. Personally I think he needs to stick to his natural game, I can live with a couple of mistakes a season if he is otherwise comfortable and playing to his strengths.

Odd stinker is fine now and then but a few every game is not acceptable.

Most of us have played low level amateur football and some of us played in defence. We all know that if your keeper, fellow CB, FBs or midfielders in front of you don't do their job - it messes everything and it exposes either your natural flaws or provokes mistakes.

We cannot judge Mings fairly based on the above.

Throw in the mix what Eamonn said above and it creates a more complex picture as a player re. mistakes and confidence.

He can be really frustrating when he makes those mistakes but I would not be quick to get rid of him at all.

Konsa was poor last night as well, but that doesn’t excuse Mings. That pass straight to their player was inexcusable. The lung busting runs forward would be OK if they were on top of him doing his day job well, which he isn’t. As well as the mistakes leading directly to goals, there were also the times he just passed the ball straight out of play when under no pressure.

when he’s made a mistake he tries to hard to make up for it
his loses his head and starts doing stupid things

just spit your gum out, get your head down do the basics right, rein it in a bit and rebuild a bit of confidence
Don’t over elaborate you’re not Baresi don’t get caught in possession sure and simple passes
Also try and move the ball forward a bit quicker to someone who has a bit more ability and we should be fine

He was off-balance and it was an instinctive slice away from goal. Reflexes more than anything, harsh to blame him.

I had a premonition we were going to concede from that corner. It must be a Villa (or football generally) trope where a defender makes a goal-saving intervention much to everyone's delight only to bugger-up in the next phase of play. Within the space of a minute, he saved with his face and chest off the line, then did the Rocky Balboa charging header over the bar to concede a corner before assisting the equaliser.

Bless him but he's too much at the heart of what we do. Konsa is not as noticeable and quietly gets on with his game which in some ways is preferable in a centre back but you can't fault Tyrone's willingness to fight for his team. I'd like a 30 year-old Gary Cahill beside him to take the pressure off and teach him. Again, I come back to Mings' England performances at the Euros. Barely noticeable, no mistakes, clean sheets etc. I think his early form at Villa, given demi-God status as we powered to promotion has almost informed the type of player he feels he has to be for us, further accentuated by him becoming captain. He feeds-off the responsibility but his natural defects sometimes shine a harsh light on the mistakes he makes. Still love him though.

I agree. He can put in some very good performances, but scrolling back through this thread highlights the mistakes to which he is prone. Last night, as soon as he lost the ball that led to their first goal, he was on some kind of mission to redeem himself and then he ended up making more errors and it generates uncertainty at the back.

Harsh to blame him, yeh perhaps if kicking a football wasn't his job.

It came at him quickly and was a natural reflex to kick the ball anywhere. He was unfortunate it went straight to the Leeds dude.
I dont disagree that more of the composure and less Rambo would be good, but like I said above, he doesn't shirk and is a leader.

I Agree.  I think we miss him when hes not there.  I wouldnt be in a rush to replace him - maybe give him some competition - but I think there are very few CB that would be an upgrade on him, and all he brings to the team.

Well said. I know he makes errors and can be frustrating but he a warrior and leads the troops into battle - first over the top is more likely to be killed.
