How eager some people are to criticise him for everything does feels like it's more in response to his anti-racism stance than his ability as a player. A lot of the comments about Smith getting sacked being his fault are from people who are also opposed to taking the knee and who were quick to slag off 3 players who missed penalties in the summer.

Any manager coming in will be delighted to have Mings. He's vital to us moving up the table.

I think he’s as culpable as anyone for our poor season. If he can’t cut out the gaffes, he needs to be replaced.

When he's out we lose his leadership and that has a huge effect. When he's in he's prone to a gaff.

I think he's a great man, and a great ambassador and frankly, his character sums up what the Villa is all about. I'm proud he's a Villa player.

Most of the poor form came from being shifted to the left of a 3. He had, like everyone, a poor first half vs Watford but was otherwise solid when we played him in a 4.

You could hear how important he was to us during the empty stadium days, always shouting and organising.

I love him, on and off the pitch.

He was better on Friday as he concentrated on dealing with the ball rather than the man or the possibility of starting an attack. You cut the errors and long balls and you have a very solid player.

He's like most other top players, in that he does what he does well, but struggles a bit when asked to do something different.  See also Buendia.  Sometimes that's forced on managers / players of course.  I thought he reacted really well to being dropped, which is another sign of his obvious strong character.

He can be excellent at times, which is part of the frustration for me. I hate the big punts up the pitch and obviously he's very prone to errors. It does seem like he's been out of form after the Euro's like has been the case for others. On the flip side though, he's a leader, a communicator and his saved us after Tuanzebe errors a few times. If he can be the best of himself much more, he's a big asset.

The man is an England International, is a huge part of us being where we are now, is a huge presence in that dressing room and on the pitch and is a wonderful ambassador for our club. For those who choose to denigrate every minor mishap or mistake could do with looking in the mirror. He isn’t perfect, show me a footballer who is, but when he’s on it he fully deserves the plaudits he gets and is in some ways an unsung hero of our rise over the last 3 years.

You could see he knew the gravity of the game on Friday night, and damn will did his best to keep Dean in a job when others went in to a trance.  The note being a case in point

I'd like the next manager to not have the tactic where it allows him to smash it 90 yards down the pitch when he's not under pressure.
