Whatever the reason it’s same for both teams.

It hasn't been implemented the same for both teams in fairness. Carey and Smith were near identical situations with the technology but different decisions were reached

Difference being that Smith was about 6 inches away from hitting the ball, whereas Carey did actually hit his one.

Either way, it should not disguise a gutless performance once more. Sack Rob Key immediately, make the fraud McCullum swim home, tell Crawley and Pope their test careers are over, take the captaincy away from Stokes (not sure who you can give it to in fairness...)

You know it's going to be shit but it's still annoying waking up to that scorecard. Having said which, I don't really get the Bazball hate. This team is doing what every England team for the past three away Ashes has done. I accept it has the feel of the party being over but for the most part, the past three years or so have been a blast.

The first year or so of it was great. When decent teams worked it out (which they were always going to do), its largely been poor.

I also think people can see that in the first two tests, Australia were very much a beatable team with the injuries they had to their bowlers. The past few series down under England have come up against an excellent and relentless bowling attack.

That wasn't the case at Perth or Brisbane. I think that is why the criticism is rightly strong

I believe any of the other Test playing countries would give Aussies a tougher test than this shambolic outfit. ECB can fuck right off with their attitude to red ball cricket at home. The twats charge us £115 for one day of cricket at Edgbaston and serve up this shit. (Sorry about bad lingo)

The batting is obviously poor, but contrast the bowling. Archer is quality and should be a strike bowler, but is the only one who offers control. Building pressure is the thing that gets you wickets and we are so inaccurate. The cold hard reality is the players they’ve invested in for this tour have failed, except Archer.

The squad selection has been really bad. How have they ended up with the back up batsman carrying drinks all summer, the spare spinner being a part timer who hadn’t been selected for three years, having no back up wicket keeper, and needing to promote a bowler to opening bowler after a really inaccurate performance in the preceding game.

Those are all dreadful decisions, that have left them no out.

Let’s start with the basics. You need a wicket keeper, not someone who is a good bat, hoping one day to be any good. Smith is not a Carey or a Foulkes - he’s a decent number 6 or 7, maybe even a number 3 now the Pope selection has so obviously failed.

You need a spinner. Not a bloke who is ok as a Test number 8 and can turn his arm over. It has to be someone who can average better than 5.5 runs an over with the ball. I didn’t mind them trying the Bashir experiment but to take him … and then not use him on the friendliest of spin pitches so far - strange.

An opener who can bat for more than 15 overs - only one is ok. I like Duckett and think he is a Test player - but Crawley? Really. Sibley or Jennings or someone who’s played grade cricket and knows the conditions … there must be some.

Have a number 3 that you can rely on to stick around and blunt the attack - Pope might be a dashing 5 or 6 but not a 3. Bethell? Hasn’t got a first class 100 and spent last summer waiting to play IPL or some other short format stuff. No doubt a good player but let the county scene at least see him and see if they can work him out.

County cricket - use it to develop Test players. Love it, cherish it, not treat it like some inconvenience between some non entity competition and the inconsequential 100.

Anyway what do I know, a paying member of the public, when I can afford the crunching prices.

I don’t mind the Bashir experiment, but why not take Dawson or Leach to cover this exact scenario. Similar to Smith, he might very well be like Carey in time, who was a batsmen who kept a bit, but again no options if it didn’t work. Pope has just played the same series on repeat for years - start ok, descend into a negative mindset with diminishing returns. He’s just not a number 3.

They've stuck with Crawley and Pope for far too long, in the hope that they could do well in Australia. They stuck with Bashir for far too long when it was abundantly clear he was nowhere near good enough, then didn't play him in the best conditions he will get.
