I mean more depth, than actual batting quality level. Absolutely not saying it’s necessarily the best line-up of batsmen (although some would be in there). I mean I don’t think we’ve ever had a line-up that bats so deep.

Fair enough.

Depending on the result of Pant’s scan on his injured foot that was a pretty even first day. If Pant can’t bat or keep wicket it’s definitely advantage England.

We were unlucky in the first session, Woakes beat the bat on several occasions, on another day they could have been 5 down at lunch. Stokes bowled as Stokes always does, he is integral to this side and I thought Archer and Carse both lacked rhythm.

Dawson really helped stem the scoring during the afternoon session and he actually improved the side overall. I like Bashir and what they’re doing with him but you could really see that Dawson’s experience came to the fore.

India 358 all out, that’s going to be a challenging total with Bumrah leading their attack.

Winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, you're probably looking to roll the opposition out for less than that, but it's not a daunting total.

Let's see how we go now.

Good opening partnership, slack shot from Crawley for his wicket but a solid start.

This is why I defend how we bat so much, we put their attack under pressure and then had an easy final session just punishing the bad balls in the main.

If you add Woakes, Carse and Dawson then I get what you mean Paul.  Archer as a number 11 is not too shabby.

Hoping England can show a ruthless streak today and finish the 1st innings with a 150 - 200 lead at least.

That was a good session for England.

I thought India bowled much better in the first hour but they lost heart and their heads dropped. In the last 30 minutes before the interval they were just treading water and this will continue this afternoon until the new ball by which time we will be in the lead.

Proper test match batting so far from England's top 4.
