It’s just a continuation of the 50 over World Cup - selection wrong, at the very least Topley should play. Tactics wrong, going with that second over of spin was just nuts. Lack of quality all round - sloppy bowling, and fielding. Several batsmen in on reputation. Just horrible all around.

To be honest there was some good stuff in the first 18 months of Bazball and that first Twenty20 World Cup with Buttler and Mott, but since then the results have been mixed at best. They need to start winning consistently - I have much more faith in the Test set up where I think there is a plan and some actual self reflection. The white ball stuff we just seem to be trying to play a lot of ageing players back to levels they’re not going to reach again. There doesn’t really seem to be a plan.


Also Bairstow was brilliant a couple of years back in red ball cricket, truly incredible for about a year. He was also exceptional as a white ball cricketer for a good period - but bloody hell it feels like it’s time to move on.

Yeah possibly but I just think England look like a team in need of a fresh start from a leadership point of view. They are separate tournaments, but there’s a lot of similarities in terms of the failures in the 50 over World Cup and the first two games of this one.

Can't really see us getting through now.  All it needs is it for to rain for Australia v Scotland and it's done and dusted.  Even if it goes ahead, the Aussies are sitting comfortably, so could afford not to pile it on and dent Scotland's net run rate too much and we're out on that. 

We would need two massive wins (not out of the question of course) to overturn the net run rate now wouldn't we?

What sort of winning margins are we talking to overturn the run rate?  Not just saying it because it has impacted on us, but surely there could be a window in a T20 tournament to replay or complete abandoned games?

I reckon we need to win these two games by a combined margin of something like 134 runs to be ahead on NNR before Scotland play Australia. That would mean Scotland would then either need rain in St Lucia or a win against Australia - as any loss would impact their NRR below ours some more. What that equates to if we bat second would obviously depend on how much we're chasing and how quickly we need to get them.

Bowling first is the key to these type of games where you need a big net runrate swing. Stick a side in, roll them for 70 then knock off the runs in 5 overs.

Batting first is surely better for improving net run rate? You want a full twenty overs on the figures. You score 100 off five overs, it's still not that big an impact over a whole group stage worth of Net Run Rate.

I think roughly speaking if we win the two games by an aggregate of say 100 runs Scotland, if they lost, couldn’t lose by more than 20 runs. That’s not exactly it, but it gives an idea of the sort of margins we’re talking about.

It is weird there’s no contingency for weather, especially the England vs Scotland game where it could have been completed if there was more time.

Its extrapolated to account for what you would have got over a 20 over innings batting at that rate. Likewise if you bowl out a team for 70 in 10 overs, it would go towards your NRR as restricting them to 70 from all 20 overs.
