It was a strange game. Around 2000 Villa fans filling the away end, and a few home areas, 1400 home fans. There was no sense of occasion . Both sides fielded changed teams, but seven of Villa’s starters were Bruce buys. We had more than enough to beat them.

Burton are not very good. They will struggle to stay up. Their natural status is National League worst, League One best, League two normally. Villa made them look like Real Madrid. I have never seen a more anodyne first half  for a competitive football match. It was like a practice  match. There were few tackles, and only one shot each in the first half. The fans watched as silently as if they were at a funeral service. Nigel Clough is no master tactition, yet their tactic of holding on to the ball, and edging forwards at a snail’s pace was too much for Villa, who matched them pass for pass. It was a game which suited slow thinkers and slow feet. Two Burton players went off injured in the first half. If substitutions had not been made, no-one would have noticed.

Burton’s goal came out of nowhere. Most of the crowd missed it as they were either asleep or on their smart phones. Even being behind did not bother Villa who stuck resolutely to their game plan of doing very little. Bruce stood on the touchline motionless, the players responded like for like.

In the 87th minute Villa were awarded a penalty when a rare shot was saved by a Burton outfield player with his hands, Adomah could not be bothered to score.

At the close, the Burton faithful thought they should celebrate a little, but it was a bit like three cheers at your gran’s 90th Birthday party. The Villa fans did not even moan or protest, a few boos, no “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” chants, no “Bruce out” cries. Just supine acceptance.

Thanks for the review Garyfouroaks - I can't help being interested in (and saddened by) the League cup. Some of my very fondest Villa memories were in this competition... I'm sure many others here feel the same.

Surely he means 'pedestrian' not 'pedantic'. So clueless he's even playing words out of position.

Stop the forum, that's post of the year for me, there will be nothing funnier.

There were a few positives for me. I visited a couple of nice pubs. I was also pleased by the Sight of the DON AMOTT KING OF CARAVANS advertising hoarding at the back of the home end. And my train ticket wasn't inspected so I can probably get away with using it again on Saturday for that portion of the journey to Sheffield.

Don Amott! That brings back memories of watching Star Soccer on a Sunday when I lived in Nuneaton. I can still hear the jingle of the Don Amott King of Caravans advert at half time. Also “DFS gives a bigger choice , yes , yes ! Now with stores in Nuneaton, Measham, Oadby and Darley Dale” Those were the days, with the Boro riding high in the Southern League and my hero/ namesake starring between the sticks (he needed to , the defence was as dodgy as ours , but a lot more brutal.) Happy days, now sadly in the distant past. Nurse ! More pills please and when is Countdown on ...?

I do like the way he has eased the recognised and highly thought of CB in Tuanzabee firstly by playing him at RB most of the season, at CB in the last Cup game and last night as a holding midfielder

WTF did Bruce say to him to get him to join for a year?

I must admit when you listen to the garbage he comes out with he does look like a man courting the sack deliberately

I hope we give him his wish

Had the same feeling I tend to have at any of these early round games. I'm not bothered, why am I here? What's the the point and the players invaiarbly feel the same.

Last night's performance stretched that theme to new extremes though.

I have no issue going out of the cartoon cup - what bothers me is our quite expensive reserves getting turned over by Burton's reserves who were bought for less than a packet of Findus fish fingers. Especially as most of them were bought by Bruce.

I don't suppose for one minute that you would.  One day I shall post something that does not elicit a contradiction from you.

I'm disagreeing with a comment you made, I'm not contradicting you.
Very good
I came for an argument, no you didn’t.

The only conclusion you can draw from the Performance and team selection is Bruce don’t give a shit.
Maybe he has worked out that he is on borrowed time and is just hanging around for his final pay day.
The only other explanation is that he is an incompetent idiot.
Either way he should be no where near managing Aston Villa.

I'd go with line 3

Don’t be ridiculous, it was the players fault.
