I agree with all of that, and I also worship at the altar of SJM. But if Man City held him in enough esteem to offer 100 million, and all that entails, he wouldn’t be turning them down for the distant hope of a medal one day at Villa.

There is pragmatism and all that, but what is the point in a comment like that, now. 8 years at the club, championship days, scored in the play off final, broke his ankle in the first year back, came back, helped us stay up. Skipper, seems like a fooking great person, honest, genuine, skillful, tenacious, the first skipper in 30 years to lift a trophy for us, first in 44 years a European trophy. The hypotheticals can stay where they belong, he’s a fooking villa legend and that is that tbh.

And like I said, I agree with all of that. The point is, that I don't see the point in using it as a stick to beat Grealish with. I was gutted when he left, and fucked off with football, in a way I haven't been since Yorke left. All I'm saying is any player in that situation leaves for Man City, including a demigod like SJM. The number of players who stay in that situation are miniscule... Le Tissier? Maybe a couple of others? Even then, it's not comparable to this era.

I can't say I've missed Grealish more than any of the others who've left us, just that he's the only one for whom I'd reserve the word 'traitor'.

I agree. I was mortified when he left, but all the my city my club crap really left a bad taste. What sums up what he became for me is this. Last game of the season in his first year there. They are playing us needing to win, to win the league, we all know how it goes, we were 2-0 up, but lost 3-2. Pep didn’t pick Grealish and there was footage of him sitting in a small booth/cupboard on his own, watching them win and he actually said in his Grealish way ‘best day of my life’. Absolutely tragic.
If a massive offer had come in for McGinn at some point  he may have left, but it never as far as we know and hypotheticals just don’t work here. He’s ours and in my view the other lad was a brilliant player for a couple of seasons and thats it, not fit to lace the great SJMs boots.

My lad was very prescient. At the height of Grealishmania he had McGinn on the back of his Villa shirt. The same match we got SJM's autograph and he gave my lad a load of time talking about his broken arm. It took my wife to remember to tell SJM about my boy's shirt. He was quite tickled.

Same here. I just find it puzzling that he's brought up in the aftermath of our first european win in 40 odd years.

I don’t have an issue for the choice he made when he did it. It was massive money and to join the top side in the division. We probably would all do that in whatever our line of work is. It’s the distancing from his past that I found disappointing. Not just the platform we gave him but that his off field behaviour was given a pass by all because of his undoubted talent. And while many ex Villa were watching and celebrating this week as we won the Europa, he was out getting wankered with Pickford at a strip club. There is much to thank him for and like about Jack, but he’ll never be the legend John McGinn is.
