McGinn said after Villa’s 6-1 victory over Brighton.

“I was thinking this morning when the manager did the tactics meeting that it's either going to be 6-1 to us or 6-1 to them,”

He got MOTM on the BBC match ratings, just ahead of Bailey and Diaby.

Upon the passing of Charlie Aitken today only right that a fellow Scot took todays game by the scruff of its neck. Well played SJM.  Admittedly hindsight , but just feels right.

He was our best player today. I don't think anybody needed to raise themselves above a 7/10 performance, we won't have a more straightforward game all season.

A brilliant right footed finish and also a disastrous one.
Great leading by SJM v Luton however and I think he's really excelling in his role

Several wonderful things about watching this match on Sunday. I was in the Witton/DE, halfway up, on the halfway line. A brilliant position to see all of our moves, and the repeated tactic of suddenly turning intervention into attack and especially, the timed runs off the ball by various players were breathtaking. Emery was a distant figure, hovering in the technical area opposite and clearly engaged with everything happening on the pitch moment to moment.

I was really impressed by SJM, his leadership ( talking all the time to team mates, directing attacks) and his technical ability when surrounded; it seemed that he turned and set off in an unexpected direction, or he was able to pass and then get the ball back to threaten again. Luton didn’t seem to have a clue how to deal with him. He was fantastic!

What a wonderful example of player development he is with his work ethic and the right manager/coaching set up.

And, what a great team we have, playing such exciting football as a result of that set up. Long may it last!

Aston Villa captain John McGinn said his side want to "write our names in the history books" by ending the club's long wait for a trophy this season.

McGinn's team face AZ Alkmaar on Thursday in the Europa Conference League when a win leave them well placd to reach the knockout stage.

Villa's last trophy was the 1996 League Cup, 27 years ago.

"Hopefully at the end of the season we can be proud of something we've done," said McGinn.

"We have three opportunities [Premier League, FA Cup and Europa Conference League] to break that spell of Aston Villa teams not having any silverware.

"We are embracing the Conference League. We know we are one of the biggest teams in the competition but that doesn't mean we can just turn up."

After two wins and one defeat, Unai Emery's Villa are second in Group E and need two more victories from their final three group matches to guarantee reaching the knockout stages.

The West Midlands club missed out on a chance to go third in the Premier League last weekend, losing to Nottingham Forest to end a six-match unbeaten run.

There is no way that we just turned up" to either game.
We didn't get the results but Emery wouldn't be treating either side lightly.
