SJM’s passing is so underrated. Some of the clever chips and through balls, had they been played by those of a more fashionable reputation, would be celebrated and shown on TV/social media with much greater frequency.

When I think of where SJM was 12 months ago and the fact that most of us would have been happy to offload him, the transformation under the Unai Emery regime is nothing short of remarkable.

Yesterday, in the 2nd-half, he received the ball under pressure and performed some sort-of 450-degree spin in order to retain and then release a lovely little chipped pass down the left wing.
The forin' commentator on the stream I was watching just said:

" John McGinn  .  .  . John McGinn .  .  .  Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha!"

It sounded pure Fast Show and was an absolute joy to behold.

Every top team needs a John McGinn.  He really is the driving force behind our midfield at the moment.  Whilst Douglas Luiz and Bouba Kamara may get more attention with their silkiness, McGinn is a force.  I'm really surprised he hasn't been linked with other top quality teams this summer.

Just about everybody has to be fair, but the improvement in McGinn is probably the most noticeable.

We've always liked SJM, but I think it's fair to say he's reaching levels that we thought were above his 'ceiling'.

And he's really embraced the captaincy. Something he was forced into because of Lego Head was not convinced Tyrone could look him in the eye. Wanker. SJM looked very unsure of himself in that role early on. He didn't even do a lot of post match press interviews. But now he represents everything it means to be captain. He's not only taken much better care of his physique and fitness, but now understands what it takes to be a top player and a great leader.

I’d imagine he was also pissed off with the way Gerrard treated the last captain before handing it to him.

What I like about it is that it's not just an upturn in form, for McGinn or for any of the players. They're just fulfilling more of their potential thanks to the high standard of coaching. You could see yesterday when McGinn got the ball, he knew immediately where the runners were going to be and barely needed to even look up.

Of course, you still need talent and the right attitude, and Meatball has those in abundance.
