I'd developed a soft spot for them from reading Irvine Welsh from right back at the start, and I was in Croatia for my mates stag do on the day. I thought I was on the pub WiFi watching it on my phone but that turned out to be incorrect and it cost me the best part of £350.
To avoid a massive quotathon:@WDV: definitely. Any terrace anthem that begins with "my heart was broken", and has as its main refrain the word "sorrow" will do for me.@LeeB: it was Renton, but wasn't it in Dead Men's Trousers? I can't remember any chapters of the Blade Artist written from Renton's perspective. I'm probably wrong about both.
My Grandad was a Hibee, my dad a Jam Tart. They lived less than a mile from Tynecastle so I ended up following Hearts.

That's me, and you, and every one of us when it finally happens.

It was the year after my first six-year stint in Edinburgh, and though I didn't really take a side in the city rivalry (anyone except the OF is fine by me) this moment absolutely got me. The song was a bit of a personal anthem for me up there too, as it is for so many of course, but there was one of those specific and fortuitous resonances in the lyrics that just absolutely wrung me, and I was on my own in a pub in Oxford, moderately sloshed, having a quiet lacrimose moment to myself. Great day.Of course if that's how I get when Hibs win the trophy and sing a nice song, should Villa win the cup this season I think Venice might have to put out a flood warning.
