Cowans was unique in my opinion: although slight, he had incredible tenacity, vision and scoring ability.
Bremner was simply an engine: he broke up play and did the simple things brilliantly (but I don’t think he would have done what McGinn did in the corner in the last few minutes today).
Platt was no ball winner but knew when to move and where to move to, at exactly the right time. He read the game well.

McGinn could be a legend in the game ... and I wouldn’t want to label him in any way, relative to other players.

Pound for pound, the best player we have signed in many, many years.

We would probably have to go back to the likes of Platt and Yorke, to compare value for money. Unless I'm forgetting anyone?

Some great value players over the years, based on the criteria of being cheap and excellent.  Obviously we've had other good players like Mellberg, but he wasn't dirty cheap.

Paul McGrath
Shaun Teale
Mark Delaney
Alan Wright
Gareth Southgate
Ian Taylor
Nolberto Solano

McGinn looks to be the first bargain in a very long time.  We've mostly had free/cheap and crap, or expensive and a total waste of money.

More reference to similarities than who is better.
Left footed.
Drives with ball
Tackles , fouls and cards
Committed and passionate player.
Solid and energetic.
There are similarities by comparison both are actually rather unique.
Mcginn is abundance of joy I just hope he doesn't get any more bookings somehow ?!

I think with the way he plays he’s prone to bookings. It’s just his game. It might be something we’re just going to have to live with.

Brad Friedel I always thought was a value signing

But John McGinn has proved something outstanding both for value and actual impact and play. A cheap transfer that actually came off !!
To recall such nonsense value no marks that we usually get for 2million in last 10 makes Mcginn even more special for me.
The scot is the value signing of a midfielder position I'm certain .
The likes of el hamadi ,Sylla and Westwood all around 2million similar fee.

Think we spent double or triple  the money of mcginn fee on likes of Tshibola, Jean Makon II , Reo Coker (wasn't he like 9 or 10million?)

Lansbury was proven in championship and he cost about 4 mil with a big wage .

The fee villa paid make it even sweeter and makes up for all those poor midfielder moves and attempts at the similar 2m fee players who have nothing on impact mcginn has made

I assume he doesn't drive and just runs home?

The effort is phenomenal. I thought I was a bit long in the tooth to idolise a modern day footballer, but that's changed with this fella.

A question for the elder Villa folk on here:

I'm 43, my first game at VP was in 1989. I've simply never seen a Villa player like McGinn, what, so, ever.

Does he have any similarities to players of past?

He does remind me a lot of Milner in a) the sheer amount of ground he covers over the 90 minutes and b) also the type if you play him wider he'd do a good job for the team I reckon.

And of course he's Gareth Barry's twin for the lovely sticking his arse in to win a 50/50 challenge.

Well he averages 1 every 3 matches.
And as say if he gets 15 bookings then he gonna be suspended for 3 matches and play off matches count as part of it. I won't highlight it again but feel need to make it abuduntantly clear as people seemed to debate it! And also not acknowledge that he picks up too many yellows
So for all his amazing contribution Mcginn he's spoiling himself with the bookings
He's had 2 suspension this season already.
The play offs are part of the season anyone who thinks otherwise just doesn't get it !
The threshold is there and those are the rules. I don't understand  why people think they  would they be wiped out just because team reaches play off. It's part of the playing season!!

So let's have it right and not misinterpret and its why I mentioned the thing in the first place . Why would I make such a point otherwise. Unbelievable

Say he gets booked next two matches
Bolton
Millwall

Then he suspended
Leeds
Norwich
Semi final leg
-------------------------------
Eligible for
Semi final leg
Final

If he gets just one booking in next 2 matches hes therefor at risk of missing more .of crucial play offs

I won't ever mention this again until it happens. Only based on fact he can't help getting booked
I will shhh now on bookings subject .
Debate or ignore all you like but I posted for good reason !

Other than that the guy is a perfect player! And an absolute joy with bundles of energy !
I hope he plays more wisely to prevent the very likely scenario of suspension.
Thats all

I thought someone suggested that the play off games do not count in terms of serving a suspension, unless a player got sent off?
