I just don't get the attacking midfielder description. In his senior career, he's made 330 league appearances and scored 31 goals, figures I'd expect from a central defender. And it's not like he was prolific before he came to us. 4 in 87 for St Mirren, 12 in 101 for Hibs.

I think his appointment as captain was just another fuck you to Tyrone Mings from Steven Gerrard.  It is all deeply personal now. All this bollocks by Gerrard saying Tyrone Mings has to "look him in the eye".
it does seem that way, Brian.

He’s best running onto balls, past the forward but not as a ball player. Attacking the opposition and not receiving the ball and playing delicate 1 - 2’s or spraying balls about. He also wins the ball more than any midfielder we have and does more than his fare share of the ugly side of the game.
If that’s not how we are going to play him then it’s no good him being in the team. Last season he was being played as a defensive midfielder at times and now he’s expected to be a Sid Cowans and spray the ball about. If Gerrard wants to use him like this then it won’t work.

When was McGinn a defensive midfielder last season?

He was played as a deep lying midfielder in a few games last season.

Wasn’t McGinn being touted as a possible target for  Sky’s favourite team 12 months ago for £50m? Now I read he’s not a PL player. He didn’t have the best season last season but he wasn’t the worst player. Seems as if he’s the latest target along with Gerrard, Coutinho and Watkins.

Think it's more he just plays every single minute of every single game that's really grating on people. You can understand that principle being applied to Grealish given he could create a goal for us at any minute but McGinn's been average for ages and I don't think at this level he's had the same consistent influence since he did his ligaments v Southampton in December 2019.

I was hoping we'd sign another CM in addition to Kamara and we've have some rotation going in that area depending on opposition e.g. 5 games in a month and McGinn starts 3 of them and is left on bench for other two.

Instead as captain he'll be starting all 5 games this month, he really should've been subbed yesterday but given he's captain others got hooked instead of him.

A few also probably wanted to see Sanson get a run of starts but again McGinn's automatic presence in team means that won't happen unless there's an injury or suspension.

Gerrard has dropped a massive clanger making him captain, he really should've given the armband to Martinez if he didn't rate Mings as a starter anymore. This decision is really going to mess up our season until it gets rectified and only way that happens is changing the manager.

Any reason we didnt hear from our new captain after yesterday's shambles?

Maybe he wasnt interviewed.

Maybe not by Sky or the BBC.  I'd have thought the clubs own media people would have though, given his new status.  Perhaps he was too busy planning his dressing room pranks for the week.

Oh dear, what a pathetic post.

Don't see how wanting to hear the views of the newly appointed captain after a dismal performance is pathetic.  I'd say its perfectly reasonable.

Mings had a disastrous 20 minute spell against Wolves that went a long way to losing the game, but he fronted up and did an interview afterwards.  Not even a peep from McGinn on social media.

It was the 'pranks' comment which made your post pathetic. I've heard better from the Twitter youth. Sounds like you have petty grudge with him but hey, that's people for you.

Appointing McgGinn as captain may be the moment that defines Gerrard at Villa. It looks the wrong call to me. Time will tell..

He's neither one of our better players nor comes across as a leader of men. I just don't get this move.

It's a weird one, as it's not something that can be undone easily without a disastrous loss of face. I understand a new manager wanting to appoint his own captain, and especially if he thinks that the incumbent isn't playing well enough to be a guaranteed starter. But then to give it to somebody even worse is a startling lack of judgement.  The problem for him though is that there aren't many stand out candidates in this team, so I think McGinn got it by being the least worst option.

McGinn being Captain after his last 18 months is frankly speaking laughable. Objectively speaking.

He couldn't lead a Jock to an Iron Bru give away. This is a shit situation we've manufactured ourselves as we've pissed off our best defender and haven't got a captain. Well done Gerrard.
