Working Class Football Identity

It's a question you'd have to ask someone on here in their teens/20's.  Is there still a youngish tribal group of fans who go home/away and spend most their money from work like in my day? Back in the 80's and 90's when we were all "hooligans" and football wasn't fashionable or thought capable of generating the money currently that was the norm with a core of friends going every week as a ritual. I know some clubs still have it but i've no idea if we do. Getting old

Back in the late 70's and 80's it was always a case of "how we getting there" for the away games - coach or soccer train special - never a thought of not going, it was our birth right to go everywhere. I remember queuing at Mold Trafford and paying £1.20 to get in the turnstile and being penned in like sardines behind fences. Long time before prawn sandwiches were even thought of. Pint  / Pie and a Bovril for colder games was your lot. I especially liked the way you were treated like total scum by HRH finest on most away days although considering the indiscriminate violence and trashing of city centres in those days I am not surprised we were all branded like that.

When married and with kids the away games became less and less only going to some of the chosen better away days. Huge rows in the household as any family do clashing with the Villa clearly was a lost cause in trying to change it.


Nowadays maybe 1 away game a season and if if anything decent clashes (holiday flights / Concerts etc) VP comes a close 2nd.

I had a part time job in a cafe in Erdington.  Ray Graydon came in one day and had a bacon and egg sandwich.  I wasn't working that day. Alun Evans came in on another day I wasn't working.
