Just on Dean Smith

The more I hear about Brentford's recruitment strategy the more I wonder if that is the key reason for them punching above their weight. So hard to tell how good Smith really is

Having a good recruitment strategy is key, but then you also need a manager who cam set up a team and bring the best out of those players.  Whenever I have seen Brentford play under Smith, they look to play good football and don't abandon it as soon as things are going wrong.

I do accept though that I have a slightly biased view of him because he is a local lad, supports Villa and came across as a really nice bloke when I met him at a garage once.

That's true

I met a Brentford fan who said that style has predated him, that he's to defensive, that bad game management cost them the play off spot they really should have got and that his failure to make them ruthless enough at either end of the pitch has been an endless source of frustration

As ever I suspect the truth is somewhere in between.

But I am mindful that I don't think he's ever finished above about 8th in any league he's ever managed in

yeah no disrespect to Brentford but they're a tiny club even by Championship standards with finances to match. Their fans may think they could have got to the play-offs but in the grand scale of things, finishing 9th in the league is not exactly underperforming

Dyche and Benitez both with articles on the BBC that translate to "my board don't back me"

Thoughts that either could be tempted mid season?  Dyche I think maybe later in the year based on how well Burnley do in Europe.

No chance. Both stocks are really high. There will be plenty of PL clubs who would want them if they are not where they want to be.

Besides, let’s hope we don’t need to look.

if you met two Villa supporters of this site you could get two very different opinions about Bruce, in fact totally different in every way,
so its all subjective

i have friend who i come into contact with on a regular basis through work who supports Brentford, goes to a few games and stuff

he says he just ok, falls down on tactics, yet others will see him as overacheiving and doing a great job

personally i think he's doing well at a club as big as Brentford, but i think we could do better now we have the new owners when it comes to replacing

Was a bit like that at Walsall. Got them playing a nice style but there was a lack of Plan B/targetman striker which cost them points and higher positions at times.

He's still a decent coach though who actually improves players on the training pitch over time, again I saw this from watching Walsall regularly when he was there.

If we were still doing the long term planning we could do much worse than him.

Most of our recent managers haven't had a Plan B.

Some didn't have an A to be honest.

That bit in his interview where he says “it feels like I’m starting again”.  Well, that’s what happens when you take a short term shit-or-bust approach with no thought whatsoever for the future.

But he did have a thought for the future, he just thought it would be in the league above.

This is not a criticism mind. If he had been profligate, we'd all be moaning that he lacks ambition.

Henry has just tweeted:

Since announcing my decision to leave my full time role in broadcasting to pursue my ambition of becoming a manager, I have subsequently been linked with a number of positions both domestically and internationally.
Contrary to misleading reports people may have read. at this moment neither myself nor my advisers have held any discussions with any club or national association. My intention has always been to be patient and I will take my decision in good time.

First transfer window buy using a transfer by numbers method without any plan on how to use them in the current set up. Transfers fails, rip up and start again.

Second transfer window loan experienced heads from the Premier League, don't rotate enough, run out of steam. Rip up and start again.

The bloke is fucking useless.

No, when he spoke to our new owners they were just a couple of randoms!
