Still some big names on that list. Old and knackered knees though. Essien, Miereles would be useful if they were fit enough. That said, if they were, they would have no doubts been picked up by clubs by now.

I like the look of this Barnsley lad, Hourihane?

I really think that the best deals are going to be found from the division that we are currently playing in.  PL players of any standard will not consider dropping down a division, only the poorest ones.  I'd sooner go for good players from sides in the championship (although I'm not entirely sure who we should target, other than snippets that I've read on here)

Interestingly, 3 or 4 of our squad have been linked with moves away.  I know Bruce has stated that it isn't going to be an earth shattering window in terms of signings but I'm beginning to think that it may be interesting.  I don't think anyone will be surprised if a new goalie and midfielder arrive.  We could also see a striker going out, paving the way for one to come in.  That's a minimum of 3 key positions.  I have a feeling 3 or even 4 signings, all of the calibre to start games will come in, in January and one or two key squad players will go the other way.

I'm looking forward to it now.

Smithies
Snodgrass
Rhodes

All fall into that catagory (calibre to start) Old Kodjia, and, importantly, gettable.

I have to admit to not knowing much about non-Villa players, so wouldn't attempt to suggest players.  Most fans speak positively about Snodgrass (as they do about Brady at Norwich and also Hourihane at Barnsley).  After being a tad sceptical about Rhodes at first, he is now growing on me and if we are to shell out, then I think he may be a better bet than Hogan from Brentford, given his record in the division.

I'd be excited by any of the names mentioned, as you say, they would make us a stronger unit instantly.  I'm not sure what kind of competition we'd face for Snodgrass, I've read a couple of PL sides linked to him recently.

lets keep our fingers crossed for an eventful window.  I don't think that we'll be disappointed, after all, we are still a big attraction to the majority of players out there.

Article in the Mirror about us being interested in QPR's keeper for £4mil, also possible interest in Ayew:

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-make-4m-move-9512572

I asked my QPR-supporting mate what he made of this while he was at Brighton watching them get thumped. This was his reply:

Quote
Smithies is our best player by a street and the rumour is we have to sell before we can buy. £4m seems a bit cheap if you've thrown £14m or whatever at Kodija but I guess we're not in a strong negotiating position.

Sounds alright.

Rhodes wouldn't suit us, we'd have to set the team up to accomodate him, we're still trying to figure out how to use McCormack properly.

This is what I've always thought-He is a number 10 type player.  I just had a look at his height and he's over 6 foot.  The other lad (Hogan) is shorter.  I think we have to play with an out and out number 9 under Bruce.  I wondered whether Rgodes could do that for us for this season and next if we're still down there?

If we could get Gestede to play like Akins the no.10 from Burton yesterday we wouldn't need to sign another forward.

It's unlikely we are going to be able to prise away players from clubs who are still in the running to go up, so we'd be looking at those playing at struggling clubs and those struggling to get a game at clubs in the lower reaches of the top flight.

I'd be tempted to give N'Zogbia another try if we could tempt him. Feel he never really got a fair chance at Villa and would work well with Kodjia.

I disagree.  We have already bought McCormack from Fulham, who are above us and Kodjia from Bristol City, who were above us at that point.  Barnsley are above us and Brentford are hardly struggling.  I would be inclined to steer clear from the top division.  However, Rhodes and Snodgrass are both players who have proved themselves at Championship level.  Forstieri also wanted to leave Sheff Weds for Newcastle in the summer.  We are still an almighty attraction compared to others above us.  Besides, the players I've read us linked to are Barnsley, QPR & Brentford.  You don't have to play in a side above us in the league to be able to improve what we have already.

And if Gabriel sees Zog running off into the middle of nowhere with his head down it could reignite his enthusiasm for charging down a channel for a ball which will never come. At least there will be people running.

I feel like we'll need to build a team at some point, rather than trying to cherry-pick good players from other teams because they're working well in said teams. My worry about buying championship players is that if we ever do get promoted we'll need to invest all over again to stay in that league. How many times in the past have we seen clubs steamroll the championship but then get massively found out in the Premier League.
