Does FFP mean we're very limited (unless we can sell someone)?

There's always the option of ignoring FFP and taking the piddly little fine like Bournemouth and Middlesbrough did.

Been impressed with Hourihane at Barnsley anytime I have seen him. Type of traditional central midfielder who can do a bit of everything, think he has already weighed in with quite a few goals and assists this season.  He's out of contract in the summer too, so Barnsley might take £4-5 million. Easily worth that, in a world where Jeff Hendrick is worth in excess of £10 million.

Meyler and Kayal would be an upgrade on Westwood too (not hard, I guess).  Horgan at Dundalk looks like one who could make the switch to a higher level of football, but unless Ayew leaves this Jan, I'd say we're covered for wide options.

I would have said that we are more than covered for forward options un'all, but with Bruce seemingly keen on Gabby leading the line over Gestede, Kodja and the rest, perhaps that is one we need to revisit. Plenty of endeavor from Gabby last night, but he looked like a Sunday League footballer. In conditioning, movement and ability. Simply trying for the first time in years shouldn't be enough to play for Aston Villa.  He'll depart with my very best wishes if he wants to get his career back on track at Walsall or Tamworth. Our aim is to get back to the topflight. We shouldn't be a halfway house for chancers who have spunked their career away.

Have to say I think Assambolanga is a terrific striker at this level.

He took the first one tonight at Ipswich superbly.

We were briefly linked to him over the summer but at the time he had been injured for a year...looks in good nick at the moment so wouldn't shock me if he's one SB looks at in January.

Snodgrass at Hull is a good player...takes a good dead ball too. I'm sure he'd rather not be losing every week at a sinking Hull ship.

Ryan Mason too, I think he'd suit us perfectly in the middle.

As a big fan of Whizzer & Chips as a kid I'd love someone at Villa called Snodgrass.

Pongo Snodgrass was in Krazy comic first, then Cheeky Weekly. It was a sad day for me when Krazy comic merged with Whizzer and Chips.

One paper today is linking us with Kieran Westwood, the Sheffield Wednesday keeper.

We're also linked with Jordon Mutch

From the little I've seen he's decent at this level

But by god if we do get promoted we'll need to buy a whole new midfield. Would be nice to pick someone up who can push on to be premier league class

Whilst not the most critical of positions, another striker in January could make all the difference.

I disagree with most on here.  I think that McCormack is a great striker at this level.  However, he needs to play as a number 10 as he is not mobile enough to lead the line and/or make balls stick if it is pumped long.

Unfortunately, it looks highly unlikely that Bruce is going to play with a number 10.  I would offer him in part ex for a more traditional number 9, freeing Kodjia to play in the wide role that seems to be working well.  Failing that, I'd bite the bullet and try to get £8mil for him, to put towards a number 9.

As I said, I rate McCormack more than most but his game time is going to be limited under Bruce.

Neither Gabby nor Rudy are the answer up top and it is a position that we could improve on vastly, by juggling with McCormack.

There's zero question McCormack is class at this level

But the post above sums it perfectly. He's a number 10 or nothing and I'm not sure we can afford the luxury

Having said that it wouldn't be the bigggest surprise to see him come in during January and be really effective

No!! £19million we were apparently willing to pay in the summer. You could build us a midfield and give the North Stand a power-hose and fine lick of paint for that.
