Villa 2 Chelsea 6 circa 1966.
« on: May 16, 2016, 11:52:25 AM »
Does anyone of the older generation of Villa remember this match? It was notable because Bobby Tambling scored five goals for Chelsea but the most memorable thing for me was the standing ovation Tambling received at the end of the from from virtually every Villa fan in the ground. If this happened these days I doubt very much if a visiting player would get such a reaction from the present generation of Villa (or any other fans for that matter)

Times have changed and not necessarily for the better.

Why would a supporter of another team applaud a player that's just scored a goal against "your team" , yes things have changed , we now know how to support our club.

I stood and applauded Scholes goal towards to North Stand several seasons ago.

I got a round of fucks for doing so but I'm always happy to acknowledge class.

It would have to be an exceptional player or achievement, but I'd do the same.

I was there and as hacked off as it's possible to be. I didn't applaud Tambling, neither do I remember anyone else doing so (though I admit to standing).

The Manchester United supporters gave Ronaldo (the original one) a standing ovation at Old Trafford when he was substituted having detroyed them when playing for Real Madrid.

Nothing wrong with showing a bit of appreciation for a world class performance.

It was both.

I coach amateur football - I've always been the only parent/coach man enough to applaud an outstanding opposition goal.

Footballs so screwed up! You're winning six nil, your opposition are still fighting, one of them pulls off something outstanding from nowhere and it's considered a weakness to applaud them.

They're spread throughout every ground manchester united play at.

We'd holidayed out of The Holte and had season tickets next to the players tunnel at the time - funny how those that only get to one or two Villa matches a season are more outraged than those of us that watch shit football week after week!

They must 'love' the Villa more than we do.

The parents of the team my son plays for have always been complimented for their behaviour, funnily enough not so much in the last couple of years when they stopped being the whipping boys of the league!

There was a match last season where the opposition keeper was in tears and getting stick from his own team and even coach and our coach went and chatted to him as our seventh went in and he then pulled off a couple of blinding saves to applause from our parents, as I'm sure you'll be aware there are some horrendous parents at junior football matches these days. My son only goes to training these days as he got sick of being shouted at by adults, not me I hasten to add!

So some of yous think it's better that we are not so sporting these days. I wonder if any of you rail about ISIS fanaticism? Sure I understand that a Villa fan

would prefer one of our lot to notch five but all the same.....

And yes I'm pretty sure it was on match of the day.
