wonder why we took such a small amount,  considering the interest from our supporters due to the circumstances.

Think the ticket office didnt take the full allocation

When I lived up there I avoided the Bigg Market like the plague and spent most nights with my fellow freaks down the Quayside, now it's a completely different beast down there, impressive but I get a little nostalgic for all the great pubs that used to be down there and have now been replaced by big hotels, restaurants and a fucking cat cafe.

I spent some time at Newcastle when I was at university as my best mate was a Geordie - early 80s, when they were abysmal and would get crowds in the teens.

I liked a pub called the Cooperage by the quays. Is it still going?

I was up there early eighties too, sadly the Cooperage has gone, I noticed the Crown Pasada is still going strong and The Strawberry but the likes of the Barley Mow and Egypt Cottage and many other great pubs and venues have gone.

I loved it up there and have kept in touch with loads of mates up there, none of whom fit the description of what people on here seem to think all Newcastle supporters are.

Your last sentence matches my own experience too. I have generally found Geordies to be pretty down to earth and honest about their own club. Their weak spot consistently tends to be along the lines of "we have won nothing for 50 years but still get 50,000 fans every week".

Have to agree with John e, Newcastle (and Sunderland) fans are some of the most loyal in the game. They generally show good humour too, which is why I find this pretend rivalry with us they've invented since they sent themselves down with an OG at Villa Park all bit ridiculous, particularly the way they've let it fester in the years since. Any club's fans would have had a laugh at it like ours did that day.
I too have been at St James' in sub-20k league crowds a few times, but their support in terms of numbers is as good as any of the top clubs when you consider the only thing they've won in most fans' lifetime is the second division.
One thing's for sure, they wouldn't be able to buy up tickets in the home ends if our own fans were there. This is one last chance to voice your disapproval at the club and let the players know what a disgrace they've been - get down there and let it all out!

Sunderland fans are very loyal.

Was on a stag do in Newcastle last weekend and was travelling back seperately so decided to go to Sunderland-Arsenal as my train wasn't until 5 and the game was on general sale.

Was flicking through the programme and was amazed to read the attendances bit to find Sunderland have had only two sub 40k crowds in the league this season, Palace which was on a Tuesday night and they still got 39k and Swansea who brought 400 fans.

Their away support is very good aswell, took 2.5k to Palace on a Monday night.

That's for a team who've had 4 home wins all season (just two more than us) and have been in as many relegation battles as us last 6 years. At least Newcastle have the odd top half finish.

There is nothing else to do in Sunderland other than watch Sunderland or bide your time until old age and death.

I must say I'd rather Newcastle didn't stay up at our place, couldn't care less if they did it the week after. I don't want them taking the pee at Villa park.

Sunderland got 2 games to play so don't think it's mathematically possible for Newcastle to survive even if they beat us and Palace.

They could easily be relegated though especially if they don't win tomorrow and Sunderland do.

I've just read this post out to Sunderland-supporting north easterner Mrs. Exeter and she agrees.

My ex was from the north east, Hartlepool. We spent a lot of time visiting all the towns and cities up there, Sunderland... I like the people but the place was like a really big Acocks Green but colder and a bit shitter.

I love it up there , went camping there with the mrs 20 odd years ago beautiful countryside , one day the exhaust went on our car in the middle of sunderland and i drove into quick fit and a bloke fitted a bandage on it free of charge , it lasted another month , the area also has  some of the best beaches in Britain,  about 12 years ago we went again with our kids , stayed in whitley bay , it was brilliant

So it's a colder, bigger, slightly worse version of the best part of Brum!

I don't buy this "most loyal fans" nonsense. Newcastle and Sunderland fans are no different to any other club's supporters. I also don't buy the "hotbed" of football description of the North East. 2 clubs, 15 miles apart? we've got 2 clubs within 3 miles of us  - and Wolves and Cov are both as far from us as Newcastle from Sunderland.

I've got nothing against either of them, except when the media trot out the lazy "loyal supporters" bollocks.

They are both one team cities and have a massive catchment area.  Sunderland must be amongst the biggest underachievers in the English game.
the 2 grounds are 12 miles away from each other

So probably the same distance as Villa and Wolves.  There are no other clubs around those two teams for miles though.  Nothing North of Newcastle in England and the nearest team west is Carlisle.
