I think it's more a case of any deals that were tentatively in place in December were suddenly non runners due to the dropped points through December leaving so far adrift.

As tempting as it might be we can't force players to sign for us.

This and also we need to be really careful with any players we add to this group, players who come in for a few months pay to fuck off again in the summer are exactly the wrong ones to be adding and unfortunately they're the ones who will happily sign for us right now.  Norwich and Sunderland were huge negative results for us, we needed 4-6 points and got none.  Decent results in those 2 and we'd be within a win or so of safety and have a much better chance of getting our targets.  If we can get another good result tomorrow then it might be enough to show players that we're going to fight to get out of this and make them think we're a decent opportunity.

I think the solution is to have our pre season in Malta to get ready for the Championship League.

Malta's a good choice though bloody hot in July.

Newcastle, Sunderland, Bournemouth etc have all done significant business already and are demonstrating that they're up for the fight.
Yep, Big Sam is looking to give it a right go, but not sure on the quality of Newcastle's spending.
I really think with a couple of clever loans and deals that allow the player to leave if we go down we could really freshen up the feel of the squad and still give it a right go.

I'm not losing any sleep over the fact Newcastle have been robbed of £12m for Jonjo Shelvey.

A signing MON would have been proud of.

I just think as far adrift as we are people won't come. Naismith of to Swansea rumours suggest.  Seen up to 9 million mentioned which would be as crazy as Grabban for 7.

Or Shelvey for £12m.  The domestic market is ridiculously overpriced and those who moan about there being too many foreigners in the English game should realise that is one of the major reasons why.

im not sure if i dreamt it but im sure i heard on talkshite that the new chairman has said there wont be a lot of money spent this window

Haven't heard any pronouncement about transfer money at all OswaldF - not a sausage - along with the "Aston Villa are not afraid of relegation" quote it tells you all you need to know mate!

he said on bbc sport that "spending money is not the answer"

Then what do they think is the answer, of course we have to spend some money, what is the plan? Sacrifice Gabby to Vishnu and hope for the best? I hate to be pessimistic after finally winning a game but this guy smacks of another financial overlord, counting beans and looking for new ways of saving money and I expect nothing more than complete gambles on transfers pre season, only even cheaper gambles along the lines of Tonev and Bennett.

Problem is we don't have a benteke to sell and Lerner will not put his hand in his pocket so there is bugger all to spend

Who says we haven't got any money? How has our expenditure in the first half of the season compared with income? Ditto rest of season?

Assumptions made may not match reality. I don't think Garde would accept Lerner pocketing any excess income over expenditure at the expense of team building. This is a different situation to realistic expenditure to match our future position.

I do not know the exact financial position of the club and I don't think many of our fans do either.

The slight issue here is that despite putting it in quotes no one said that, it does say in the article

Quote
Hollis told BBC Sport the club needed "shaking up" but insisted that spending money on players was not the solution.

but that note a quote so we don't know the context.  The only bit that has actual context is from Fox a little further down:

Quote
"The results speak for themselves. When a great club like this, with its history and heritage and success it has had in the past, finds itself in a relegation battle for five seasons in a row, despite spending money to bring players in and changing managers, you have to ask yourself 'what is fundamentally wrong?'
"The principles Steve talks about are the ones we need to bring to our football set-up so that when we got to our board and ask them to spend money on acquiring players or coaches, we have a good sense for how that investment is going to pay off for the owner and how it is ultimately going to deliver results on the pitch."
Hollis added: "Randy spent a lot of money last summer and we are not seeing the result of that. This is about hard work, commitment and a focus on continuous improvement."

Which is very different, that's not saying they won't spend money, it's all about spending money well.

We didn't spend a lot of money last summer though did we. Unless we disregard the big amount of money we brought in. Good old Randy spent very little, like the season before and the season before that. His days of spending are long over.

Does money that you've earned through wise purchases/sales not count when you spend it?  Why is a 'net spend' so important?

Because if you are getting a lot of money in, you are obviously selling your better players, if you are starting from a weak base, which we were then I'd say its pretty certain that if you aren't investing heavily on improving the team, not just spending what you made, you are going to struggle very badly to move on up. Unless every one you buy hits the ground running and are great purchases.

Has anyone in the last 10 or 20 years made improvements from years of struggle without spending any money? I can't remember any off the top of my head.

Leicester in talks with another defensive midfielder according to the BBC so maybe that would free up Inler.

Leicester haven't spent half a decade in a downward spiral. They also spent £40m the last 2 seasons. So hardly making an improvement from years of struggle.
