Yes Pat, I think with time and a chance to adapt Veretout (and the others) will be able to offer us plenty.  Interesting to hear what your pal said. Maybe Veretout had half an idea that he would be leaving the club in the summer and that had an impact on his post mid-season break form?  He's still a young lad so I'm not going to expect him to be a world beater straight away but      to my (admittedly untrained) eye there's definitely a very good player in there.

Not sure if its been mentioned, but other than the win, the next best thing for me was hearing Sherwood clearly yelling "Move the ball, move the ball, move the ball" during the second half, something that's looked alien too us for as far back as I can remember.

Guzan  -7- Made a great save, didn't have much else to do but in general he was solid. He could do better with his passes though.

Bacuna -6- Nice start for Bacuna. When Gradel came in I was a bit scared due to his defensive weaknesses but did ok.

Richards -7- He was terrific with his marking and tackling. Maybe he lacks a bit on aerial battles, anyway didn't cost the team.

Clark -7- He was aggresive just like his defensive partner. Looks better than ever.

Amavi -7- He showed real potential with his pace. Probably going to be a revelation. He could pass his defender whenever he wanted.

Westwood -7- Provided the assist. Was the same consistent good player we know.

Gueye -7- Very good debut. Didn't do anything great but was consistent with his passing defense and technique. Is going to be very important. The closest thing to fill the boots of last year's captain.

Veretout -6- Didn't show much probably not 100% match fit but ok for his debut. Good simple passing.

Ayew -6- Sloppy, needs time to show what he is capable of. He seems strong and fast.

Sinclair -6- He is a vital part of the team. Pace and skill down the flanks, didn't create much though.

Gabby -7- Always a threat for defenders with or without the ball. Could have done better with 1-2 chances he had.

Subs:

Gestede -8- Man of the match. Came in had a chance and then scored the winner. When Tim brought him in everyone could feel his presence.

Sanchez -7- The energy Villa needed in midfield. Was decent and helped the team get the clean sheet.

Great to get off the mark with 3 points, and to see some promising performances from the new boys.

To add my voice to the Gabby debate I think he was a different player once Gestede came on. When the ball was sticking up front and the shape if the front 3 was more settled he wad happy to gamble running on to things and stretched them a lot more.

Did anyone see the fan go arse over tit during the Gestede goal celebrations?

 ;D ;D ;D

Isn't that Drummond?

I think ayew' best position is central. It's just that the same applies to every other one of our attacking players except Sinclair!

Howe - “It’s a textbook, lower league goal"

It was good enough to beat you.  Eddie.

It was a corner the bell end. He might be new to this top flight lark but he's going to find out a lot of teams try to score from corners and they're not something that only exists in the second division.

They might also be in for a shock when they don't anything near the number of penalties they did last season.

And Callum Wilson looks every inch the lower league centre forward.

another irony missed by Howe is that his lower league forward missed his chances, while our lower league forward buried his. He'll soon find that having the wrong lower league forward in your team will lead him back the lower leagues.

I can't help but think the 'we rode out luck first half' bit is being overplayed. Shearer credited Bournmeouth with 3 good chances, I made it just the two, both from players under pressure from defenders. When you restrict a team two two decent chances on their own patch you should expect to come away with something. Looking at the other games on MOTD, Spurs dominated the early proceedings at OT and had much better opportunities to take the lead. Swansea were all over Chelsea at times and even Sunderland had good chances to open the scoring before it started raining at the other end. No one seems too bothered about all that.

If there were lower league goals put in yesterday they came from the unfortunate Kyle Walker at OT and an even more outrageous OG for Chelsea's second.

It was always going to be a tough one and Bournemouth kept an excellent shape right through the game and played at full steam from the off. We dealt with it, came home with the points, and had several top notch individual performances to enjoy in the process.

Thought Sherwood got his tactics spot on. See them out for 30 mins (they were always gonna come straight at us full pelt) and then get at them a bit more second half. Rudy made a big difference and I thought Bmth tired second half. Nice footballing side but they seem to lack in the last third, but then again they are up against prem# opposition now.

Living in Bmth now I got a ticket for the home end (that wasn't easy when Rudy notched!) and interesting to hear the fans talking. One point was that they soon realised that they didn't have any time on the ball once it got into the last 3rd. They were closed down.
The other comment made me laugh second half "I thought these lot were meant to be shit, they are actually quite good and have played some good football"
Oh and a couple of "bloody hell he's quick" when Amavi and Gabby had a run...

And as for plastic fans..my god, they've been popping out the wordwork all over the place for the last 3 months....it's been sickening.

Is there a Vine (or other) link to the goal anywhere? Risso's YT link has been deleted.
