The only thought to cling to was that losing 4-0 is marginally better than losing 2-1 in the last minute, or being 2-0 up and losing, or losing on penalties - after 50 minutes we knew we were beat and there was nothing we could do about it.

My Hull supporting brother in law was suggesting to me on Sunday that their method of losing - going two up only to still lose - was more gutting. I think he was right. Less embarrassing but definitely more gutting.

I suppose so.  The comprehensive nature of our defeat meant all we could really do was hold our hands up and admit we were beaten by a better team.  To be 2-0 up and then have it snatched away must have been very galling.

I think Arsenal in that form would have beaten just about anyone on Saturday. I wasn't annoyed that we lost heavily so much as that we put up such a feeble attempt.

Arsenal will look good against any team that afford them the luxury of space without even pressing the ball. We allowed them to do whatever they wanted on that Wembley pitch relatively unchallenged. They won't have many easier 90 minutes against such clueless opposition.

Has we lost 2-0 or even 3-1 but had a proper go then I think the feeling around here would be a lot different. While I have my own thoughts on why it happened the way it did, it was undoubtedly massively shit to sit through and experience.

What made it worse was the fact that it also looked very much like what we were served up for the first two thirds of the season (and the last two league games).

The worrying thing is that we quite often start slow or just collapse during the games.  It is not just isolated games.  It has happened so many times that it shows a lack of character/determination/aggressiveness etc.  This is why Sherwood needs to bring in a complete spine to the team and harden us up.  We have picked up a lot of bookings and red cards this season but how many have been for being too aggressive.  Most have been for petty things or for rash challenges.

It did appear Lambertesque.

Maybe it was by way of a homage.

"Abide" was probably the most memorable part for me.
Thought the Anthem got a good belt-out as well.

The bloke next to me got very annoyed by my Villa Union Jack ( very old and fading, nabbed off a factory roof by my mom, Aston Villa written in black marker pen by me in the late 70s) during Abide with me. I apologised and had a wee chat - he was from Norn Iron. A few seconds later he pointedly sat down during the national anthem so I figured it wasn't just me.

In your you wee chat you should have advised him that if he finds the British flag and national anthem so upsetting, he'd be best avoiding major sporting events on the mainland in the future.  What a bizarre attitude!  It's the equivalent of a British person going to the All-Ireland final at Croke Park and getting a bit tetchy at the sight of a tricolour and the Irish anthem.

With 3 Irish grandparents I am aware of the sensitivities from the land across the sea and Saturday before kick off was not the time or place for a discussion. More pressing matters were at hand....

Well those sensitivities can stay across the sea and in the environs of Glasgow as far as I'm concerned.
And maybe comments about them can move to Off Topic threads

That was the impact of playing Walcott up front. I think it made the back four play deeper than normal, consequently stretching the game, leaving more gaps 'between the lines'. Clever move by Wenger.

It may even have been the point where some belief was lost in the dressing room before the game.

I'm back in work today after the Bank Holiday over here.  I'm not getting half the piss taking I was expecting.  I'm being treated with mild pity after that shambles.

There hasn't been a mention of the result on The Archers. I bet Kenton's regretting splashing out on his credit card to get that 50" TV. I'm still baffled how he arranged it to be delivered so quickly as well. He obviously doesn't shop at Currys.
