What, like Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea?

Yeah, thank God for that, someone could have been blinded by the sun gleaming off the trophies.

Firstly, a great win. I didn't go yesterday which was bloody typical really. Apart from a few shots over the bar, Spurs didn't really trouble us that much. From the sometimes poor screen in pub, Delph and Clevereley both had decent games again and I think Sanchez in there let's them do that so I think he'll be a miss next week, although it was a stupid challenge at the end.

I thought the ref was ok overall, i've seen worse even if he seemed to play an age at the end.

As for Doug, if he still enjoys going to games and is healthy enough to do it, then fair enough. I understand some of the animosity as well though.

It seems unfortunate to sully a great result with mention of Ellis, but all this 'fair play at his age' crap really gets up my pip. Have we learned nothing about the man over the last 30-plus years? It's not some great sacrifice he's making, going to away games. It's all about ego. He travels to games in a Rolls Royce, gets feted by whichever club it is, sits in the directors' box, enjoys corporate hospitality, gets his smug face on the telly, keeps himself in the public eye (where he's most comfortable) and has people fawn over him with a load of 'fair play at his age' bollocks.

If he didn't keep it up he'd probably shuffle off his mortal coil, and although a dead Doug will get plenty of media spotlight, the great tragedy for Ellis is that he won't be around to bask in it.

I take it you don't like Doug then Jimbo?. Most of the older fans (including myself) have an entirely different view to the select band of 'experts' that always dive in whenever his name is mentioned. That is their right of course but when Percy Matthews and Doug Ellis took over the club in the late sixties we were almost at rock bottom. Doug ,in particular, brought the club out of the Victorian age and thoroughly modernised it from top to bottom. He stopped us being known as The Hall of Memories,he brought Pele to Villa Park. That is Pele the worlds most famous footballer!. During the 1970s he was without doubt the best Chairman in the top division. He choose the right person to sell the club to in 2006 and will still be attending up to and including his hundredth birthday and probably for long after

Yes his treatment of the Barton family was appalling but would you say,for example, you would rather have  had Ken Bates, the Bhatti Bros or Bob Lord as Chairman, somehow I doubt it. There isn't a single chairman or club owner who doesn't get bad press in these days of social media, for Gods sake leave him alone. He is not a war criminal I think you might agree with that at least....or perhaps not.

What an important win that was with the other results going our way. Just hope chelsea beat qpr later and it will be a good weekend all round.

Good post. And yes we could quite easily have become Leeds, Sheff Wed, Forest, Wolves, Coventry...

don't know if this has been mentioned already but all of the catering staff at Spurs yesterday were wearing 1981 retro Villa shirts.

I know he didnt treat Tony Barton well as the manager (but he wasnt the choice of Ellis) but what did he do to the Barton family that was so bad?

For me seeing Ellis doesnt really register one way or the other. Whilst in charge he was good and bad. I do remember in the 80s and 90s the neighbours of my folks were big Villa fans and also friends of the Ellis family through the church and used to speak very highly of them. That had used to get me mad when it was clear it was all about Ellis himself. But Im long over that now

I really couldn't care less about Ellis any more, it's in the past. But when Villa fans are talking up his undying commitment to the club, it does frustrate me somewhat. I'd be more likely to talk up the undying commitment of our fantastic away fans, of all ages, who turn up in great numbers and always in great voice, despite the huge cost of match tickets, transport, refreshments, and the frequently shit football served up. Yesterday's result is for all Villa fans, but especially for those away fans.

I assume that was the away end and only the away end. Seems like a really bright idea, it makes it harder for the visiting hordes to give them a tough time.
