Hutton was part of back five but playing him in midfield would have been a great recognition of McLeish's pathetic effort against his former club at white Hart Lane.

He has no tactics, so all he can do is provide grit, passion etc. 'Big chests lads' management.

he cant even do that lol

see fa cup final and the bitters at home

In fairness, as much as we didn't turn up, Arsenal were great against us.

Sherwood's much-lauded 'honesty' is actually him standing in front of the cameras every week and saying 'not me guv'. This is what pissed off the Spurs fans so much - no matter how foolish the strategic masterplan Sherwood sent them out with, he would always go to the press after the defeat and complain about the players not having enough 'desire' or 'grit' or whatever. His theme with us is more 'individual errors', but it's still not him.
<snip>

I've seen some of this today in the paper reports, saying how he needs players that can go to places like Stamford Bridge and be up for the fight and not be scared. That's a shocking thing to say for me. For me it's out tactics and organisation that have let us down so badly. We have a good squad of players and he should be getting far more out of them. Disappointing response from Sherwood, but true to form it seems.

I can see what he's saying, he's saying 'have no fear'. Teams go to places like that and Old Trafford and already think they're beaten.

I agree with the sentiment but then setting up with 5 at the back at home against Stoke isn't setting the best example.

Did he actually play 5 at the back? I thought Hutton was the right midfielder? Either way, yes it was a bit of a strange one.

I think it was meant to be 3-5-2 but the wing backs got pushed back which I think is always going to be the problem with that formation against well organised teams.

It was a particularly bad mistake given that, as he revealed post-match, the tactic was to get it wide and get crosses into Gestede. If your plan is to use width, why only use wing-backs? It was very basic stuff.

He also, amazingly, said that you can't just go out there trying to not get beat, as 'I tried that a couple of times and got beat anyway'. Just making it up as he goes along.
So he has a very strong totally fluid instantly changeable footballing philosophy!

As TS has made some stupid mistakes, and not learnt from them.and thats why he should go.

Rodgers, has suffered, from missing out on league title and expectation of it and champ league.

Villa don't have that - just play as a team, and get near to 10th place.

Rodgers might not be the man to do that, but TS isn't as he should have a team formation and some plan Bs by now, not guessing. They had pre-season for that

And so it begins. In two weeks we will be looking for a new manager.

Hopefully they're already looking and lining up rather than waiting for the inevitable.
Yes, apparently Nigel Pearson has been sighted locally #joke

Well there's certainly something very 'funny' about Pearson that i can't quite put my finger on.

Really enthused to see all these stories about Tim going, he clearly doesn't have the capacity to put things right. I genuinely believe we have the worst manager in the division at present, he stands out as thick in the world of football which takes some doing.

Three at the back would have meant playing Bacuna on the right. Playing Hutton on the right meant that it was in principle a back 5.

When the team was announced I thought Crespo was going to play left back and Amavi on the wing.

I realise I am much in the minority but do not think he has been given long enough. He inherited an absolute shambles of a team and should be given until Christmas-even if it means we sink further. Again, I must be the only one who thinks Ray Wilkins is a great choice for assistant.
Both speak plainly and I do not think we want to hear anything at all when we lose. I am as disappointed as anyone but also do not expect too much after the last 10 years of misery.

Whatever it was it was bizarre and ultimately negative. Like a number of his tactics to start games and stop the opponent from playing which played into their hands. He stopped being fearless and became scared of defeat. The job overwhelmed and has him looking like a tramp who hasn't eaten and slept in months. It will be for the good for his health if we end the stress it has brought him and most importantly us.

Anyone else find themselves deeply unconvinced by Brendan Rodgers?

Yes, he got them to second, but how much of that was about Suarez?

And if we're concerned about tactical messes now, what about the tactical clusterfuck he managed to produce in the semi final?

I'm more 'quite' unconvinced than 'deeply'. He wouldn't be my ideal person, but I can't help but think he's much closer to the right path than our managers hitherto.

Oh, I definitely agree with that, but it's not really saying much.
