Isn't any comparison of Sherwood and AVB somewhat hindered by the fact that Sherwood has a managerial career that consists of 22 matches, whereas AVB has one which consists of several seasons?

I don't really see how you can really make a legitimate comparison on the basis of such a small sample of matches.

You can of the season they both managed the same set of players though surely.

No, it really isn't.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really give too much of a shit about AVB, but you are talking about a season where Sherwood took over AVB's team. It's not a direct "this is what he did, this is what the other did" comparison, because the second one was using the squad / team built by the first one.

But it is of course a direct comparison. Only it doesn't fit the Sherwood is a useless oaf argument.

What we need is some more stats on this thread.

it's a football forum where people talk about football. Nobody is busy beating up their kids or burning effigies over it.
May be not you but it's carnage in my house.

But it's not a direct comparison at all.

Sherwood took over AVB's job. One came after the other. Sherwood took over AVB's squad, team and signings, a team he'd had for a season and a half. That alone makes it an unequal argument.

I honestly could not give one tenth of one single fuck about Villas Boas, I genuinely couldn't, and it is a pointlessly futile argument for us as it doesn't really have any relevance, but the fact is, it is not a reasonable comparison for those reasons.

It's not even relevant, because frankly, who cares? The question at hand isn't about who did best out of one manager or another with a squad which was in sixth place or so.

I don't really care much about who did the best job there, I care about what one of the people concerned is being asked to do for us, and how qualified he is to do it.

I can't even begin to quantify anything involving Spurs that doesn't include even the slightest nod towards their wage bill.

If you think 14 good results with a much better team is a sound basis for giving him a three and a half year contract with us then good luck to you.

I had to pull out all of the accounting big guns on that one.

So say who we should have got then instead of just moaning?

Anyway, if you go with that x followed y argument,  that means that Di Matteo is a better manager than AVB (now that IS a very direct and worrying comparison) and that Jose Mourinho is inferior to Avram Grant.

first view of the site since the news. Personally thought that this time, Lerner would go for a name and put Villa back on the map so to speak (like when he forked out for Darren Bent) so was expectin Klinsmann or someone of that ilk. Sherwood may provide the new manager effect that will see Villa safe but long term could we be in for more of the last 4 seasons?

anyway welcome to Aston Villa, Tim - hope to see some good football under you and lets face it who needs Zinedine Zidane when we've got Tim Sherwood  ;)

Cut the negativity and give the guy a chance. He's not Paul Lambert so that's a positive.

I may be wrong as had a good day, but did you not say it was the wrong choice? If that is the case, tell me who we should have been looking to appoint
