Again, absolute conjecture. I would bet my house on the fact that a multi million pound company has looked at and considered more than one person for the most important position within its management structure. You however, have made up your mind and seem to believe you have inside knowledge as to how Tottenham Hotspur conduct training and Aston Villa conduct recruitment procedures. I imagine you don't but am happy to be proven wrong. Go for it.

It is disappointing that we never seem to be able to make an exciting appointment. It's always either expected, disappointing, or expected and disappointing. I hope Sherwood is a success, but I think a lot of that will depend on if we can get a good coaching staff. I just hope in future we can make a surprising and ambitious appointment.

Look, let's get this straight.

If you are the head of a business of any type you interview and appoint senior staff based on a proven track record, and if you don't,  you're asking for trouble.

I absolutely appreciate the attitude of some posters to reach for and interprete the positive aspect of this appointment because of the need for change - but I'm afraid I'm a littl more cynical than that.

We are in the shit. I don't want another maybe, could be or wanna be. I want the best. A football
manager with a proven track record, a sure fire bet, christ almighty, just someone that would get us all united and excited.

I'm sorry if it sounds negative but Sherwood ticks so few of those boxes I find it hard to put any faith in him. I expect to stay up by default but is this the man to lead us forward? I don't think so... or at least I've not seen anything in his history to suggest he is..

Time will tell. Mourinho, Ferguson et al had to prove themselves somewhere but to be honest I'd rather not let our premiership status be the experimenting  ground for anyone, let alone this deluded self promoting charlatan.

In all this hoo haa I think a few people are getting confused that thinking it is a bad appointment and Sherwood is a twat means you're in some way not going to support him or want him to do well.

As if you're not meant to have an opinion on anything he's done in the game prior to today.

I think it's s mental appointment and Sherwood strikes me as dim and unqualified, but I'll want him to do well as much as the next man does. As I am sure all the other unconvinced will.

I agree with you, and I was underwhelmed/bewildered by the appointment, but don't you think that the ferocity of some of the reaction has been a bit like chanting divorce statistics from the back of the church at a wedding?

Everyone gets it, it's not ideal, but it's day one. Maybe lighten up a bit.

What else do you expect people to do? We've just appointed a new manager. Of course people are going to have a lot to say about it. We've spent day after day of the season so far having plenty to say about Lambert. Why would that be any different now?

Maybe you should lighten up a bit?

Sir graham was only 42 years old when he joined us.  Seems remarkable to think he's now 70.

It seems the tactically inept Sherwood got significantly more out of them, than the much lauded and highly thought of tactical genius, modern progressive manager that is AVB.

Except he didn't, given that AVB had the better win % over his tenure.

At least get your bloody facts right.
Sherwood had a better win % than AVB, fact and that's with AVB having the world class, most expensive player in history for a whole season.

Sherwood got more out of the team than AVB did and improved then quite a lot.

Let's hope he can do the same for us.

Oh yes, get my facts right:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Sherwood#Managerial_statistics - 50% in all comps
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9_Villas-Boas#Managerial_statistics - 55% in all comps

AVB had Bale, but Sherwood had better squad depth (and it's not like Eriksen is some mediocre player anyway).

Someone above made a post about Sherwood having a higher PL win %, and I'm willing to accept that. But frankly, I'd much rather prefer the record in all competitions. I don't believe in this "prioritise the league" nonsense, especially when you had a deep squad of players like Spurs had (plus they were pretty much out of the CL race when he took over anyway).

Anyway, the win % was presented as a response to the suggestion that Sherwood got "significantly more" out of the Spurs players than AVB. That's quite clearly not true, because the results were pretty much the same. regardless of what win % you look at.

In the season in question, it very much is true.

Isn't any comparison of Sherwood and AVB somewhat hindered by the fact that Sherwood has a managerial career that consists of 22 matches, whereas AVB has one which consists of several seasons?

I don't really see how you can really make a legitimate comparison on the basis of such a small sample of matches.

Time to be realistic perhaps, we are not a top club. There again I remember being totally underwhelmed by the appointment of Ron Saunders

Jesus.

I was thinking today, Sherwood is the same age as me. When I look back at Sir Graham arriving, I see him as being a fair bit older. Not four years younger.

Given our form since the Irishman left would we attract an exciting/inspirational manager?

They aren't?

Can everyone please ignore the Tim Sherwood shaped Wicker Man on the Holte End car park tomorrow. Not that I put it there. Or know it's there. But just in case it is.

You can of the season they both managed the same set of players though surely.

No we're all just older. I was 21 when he joined and now I'm pushing 50.

I'm 45 next month. I still can't believe i'm going to be the same age my dad was when he died. In my head i'm still 20! On top of my head i'm sadly nearly 45.
