I'm flabbergasted.  Why a 3.5 year contract?
Is there a worse run club than Villa?

I for one will give him a chance.

Welcome Tim.

Is the correct reaction. It would be nice to afford him some courtesy and to give him a chance. Treat him as you would like to be treated
I'm not looking for new friend I'm looking for a top quality manager and there's nothing to suggest he is one.

Indeed Hilts, but attracting a top quality manager to this mess of a club right now was something that was never, sadly, going to be possible I think. Perhaps when the uncertainty over new ownership is sorted and we are back on a bit of a level footing but not right now. I think we had very few options open to us for reasons already debated at length on here

Jimbo - I acknowledge that we're not as big as we were, and I only really dreamed of the Klinnsman/Prandelli level. But there's got to be something between that level and the level of Sherwood, and our brilliant recruitment team didn't even look - they only interviewed one man.

It's okay to dislike the appointment.

But some of the hyperbole is bordering hysteria more associated with geeks when the "wrong actor" is chosen to play the 26th incarnation of Spiderman. Or currently "the new Ilya Kuryakin isn't blonde enough".

I suppose football fans are geeks too!

All this negativity from the same people who championed the appointment of Lambert. Frankly I'd be more worried if we appointed a manger most on here were happy with. Give the geezer a chance!!

I was against the appointment of Lambert - does that mean I get to moan about Sherwood?

Really? Or was it more that you were more cautious or sceptical than others? I don't recall you ever being outwardly against him.

No, I was dead against his appointment. He then said all the right things when he first got here so I got a bit more warm about it. But ultimately, my initial feeling that he was essentially another British plodder was, sadly, proven right.

Richard - I just asked a question, it wasn't meant bitchily or anything. I just genuinely don't know what that phrase means in practical terms.

Well we'll need to agree to disagree. As I recall you weren't as sold on him as others but saw him as marginally better than OGS who we were also linked with at the time. At no time did you say you were dead set against him.

As I said on the replacement thread it looks like he's the only person we've spoken to at any length which makes me very nervous.  I'll give him a chance but I think we've made ourselves look a bit stupid by just jumping in with the first guy who looked our way after Lambert went.  They seem to have panicked a bit aout not getting someone in straight away.
If you are drowning or your house is on fire you want a quick response you cannot choose your savior ( I hope he does save us)

Well there's a tanker of something just turned up.  We're about to find out if it's full of water or petrol.

The fact that they only interviewed him and that they clearly did it with the Lambert still in charge are the two most disappointing things for me. I don't know how it will all turn out, but we should have looked much further than we did. If we started this process two or three weeks ago then we should have spoken to others at that time too.

Very much an unknown quantity. He only managed for 28 games at Spurs, but won at least 50% of them.
But he's young, hungry and ambitious. He played attacking football at Spurs, is well known to work well with and develop youth players (might see Grealish back now).

He can be a bit of a gobshite and no real experience over a long term...I think he'll do ok. Not my first choice but not really disappointed either..and pleased that the club acted so quickly...

Welcome Tim....

Young? He is younger than Jesus, greedy and deluded other than that he is fine.

Ok younger than Rafa, Wenger etc etc..
Deluded yes probably..he'd fit in very well on here :-)

Touché  M avfcpg😂
Ha ha ...:-)

Sherwood's managerial record:

LC West Ham (h) L1-2
PL Southampton (a) W3-2
PL West Brom (h) D1-1
PL Stoke (h) W3-0
PL Man United (a) W2-1
FA Arsenal (a) L0-2
PL Crystal Palace (h) W2-0
PL Swansea (a) W3-1
PL Man City (h) L1-5
PL Hull City (a) D1-1
PL Everton (h) W1-0
PL Newcastle (a) W4-0
EU Dnipro (a) L0-1
PL Norwich (a) L0-1
EU Dnipro (h) W3-0
PL Cardiff (h) W1-0
PL Chelsea (a) L0-4
EU Benfica (h) L1-3
PL Arsenal (a) L0-1
EU Benfica (h) D2-2
PL Southampton (h) W3-2
PL Liverpool (a) L0-4
PL Sunderland (h) W5-1
PL West Brom (a) D3-3
PL Fulham (h) W3-1
PL Stoke (a) W1-0
PL West Ham (a) L0-2
PL Aston Villa (h) W3-0

Good news: Not many draws, and lots of goals.  Good record v Stoke, and beaten Man U at Old Trafford.

Bad news: Some heavy beatings in there from Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City.  Inconsistent results - doesn't seem to have established a decent run anywhere in there.;
Now where have we seen something like that before?

This is a reactive, bargain-basement appointment, which is kind of what we do. But it was quick and painless and there really aren't many alternatives at this stage of the season. We should have sacked Lambert ages ago, but we didn't, and now we need a super-quick response to dropping in the bottom three.

Hopefully Sherwood can shake things up sufficiently in those 13 games to get us out of the shit we've allowed ourselves to slide into. Something tells me he won't suffer a lack of effort, or Benteke-style petulance, or Gabby-style gormlessness gladly.

Some of us have to face up to the fact that we're not a big club any more. We've scaled back everything, including our ambition, over the last five years, and now we're the type of club that gambles on unproven talent simply to exist in the Premier League. Frankly, all that talk of Klinsmann or Benitez was reminiscent of the time we thought we could get Ancelotti, and ended up with McLeish. Except this appointment is much more promising.

Well he's not McLeish, I'll give you that Jimbo. Not sure about "much more promising" though. I can only think people are willing to except him as manager in the same way a child would except a large present wrapped up under the Christmas tree. Little do they know it's from Poundland.

Agree with you completely on the rest. I guess it's really hard to swallow just how far the club have fallen in stature that we have to scrape the bottom of the managerial barrel. Personally I'd really banked on Fox being a bit more ambitious and done his homework to bring in the best manager available.

We go again..

No, I understand Monty. I guess we are all faced with giving people a chance in our work etc whom we don't necessarily like and had no influence over appointing. I've certainly had to and sometimes it works out and they prove you wrong, other times your concerns are confirmed

I don't quite get this 'give him a chance' meme that always goes around. I don't have a choice but to give him a chance - it's not up to me. I dislike the appointment, and if I'm proved wrong I will stop disliking it, if I'm proved right I'll continue disliking it.

Agree with this 100%.

Again, absolute conjecture. I would bet my house on the fact that a multi million pound company has looked at and considered more than one person for the most important position within its management structure. You however, have made up your mind and seem to believe you have inside knowledge as to how Tottenham Hotspur conduct training and Aston Villa conduct recruitment procedures. I imagine you don't but am happy to be proven wrong. Go for it.

That is the best explanation of the responses i have seen on here. Well said ..........
