He was a lunatic. After his debut in a friendly against (I think) Motherwell he walked into the players hotel and announced "I'm going to get absolutely off my face tonight."

I just think that little trick to beat the Bournemouth defender and set himself up for the shot makes the Gil goal the act of a clearly classy player. Lowtons was more speculative although he had scored a fine goal against Swansea at the start of that season so clearly had it in his locker.

Fabian Delph says Carles Gil has impressed him greatly on the pitch - and off it too.

Delph was watching from the stands as Gil produced a perfect finish to set Villa on the way to a 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the FA Cup fourth round.

He thinks Gil has a bright future in claret and blue.

He said: "We've got Carlos and Carles so I have given him the nickname Gilly - it's a lot easier.

"He looks a great player - a real talent and he's only young. I call him twinkletoes.

"First off, he works hard and he is committed. I always like to see those qualities in players I play with. I definitely see that in him.

"His goal against Bournemouth was brilliant. But he's been doing that all week in training. It was no surprise when he did it at the weekend.

"But it was definitely an unbelievable moment and an unbelievable finish. To see the fans celebrate the goal - with that noise they can generate - was great to watch."

Delph was awestruck by Gil's performance at the weekend- just as he was the previous week as the new signing wowed the squad with his vocal skills.

Gil performed Spanish pop song The Macarena to his enthusiastic team-mates - with Delph recording it for posterity.

He added: "It's a tradition we have here with new signings that come in to the club. It's a bit of fun.

"We're gutted when the lads do well actually! I was impressed with Gilly but the boys weren't happy that he only sang for about five seconds.

"On the field, he's been great to train with. He's a real talent out there. He's brilliant to link up with on the pitch.

"He's definitely going to make things happen for the team. I am sure of that.

"He's exciting, young and only going to get better."

I saw an interview with a Bolton player about a week after Curcic signed for Villa. He was asked if the confidence of the dressing room had taken a knock after the sale of their best player and he replied that it had improved because of it.
