If he gets Sinclair too then wide right and left of Benteke are sorted but it's a gamble pinning survival on a bloke who has not played much for 3 years and a kid new to the league. I would still be tempted to go for Maloney on the cheap as a creative option on top.

He needs to do something because we're creating nothing. Not scoring is one thing, not creating anything is even worse.

I just wrote something similar on another thread, but the impact that Albrighton (a completely bog-standard winger) had on Saturday, should really have hit-home to Lambert about just what a player with attacking will and intent can do. He probably created, or had a hand-in, more chances in that game than any of ours have in the past 2 months.

He did the same for us in the final few months of last season as well, simply by standing really close to the touchline and relentlessly firing in crosses in the general direction of the six-yard box after trying a couple of half-hearted jinks.

I personally think this is a fantastic move. He looks like an exciting and young player who, while using his pace and technical ability, can use the ball to create to dangerous situations.

Villa have managed to break out of the 'hoof-it' mentality and we're being a lot more possessive and confident moving the ball around the field, albeit just in the middle at present. Hopefully, Gil will bring a bit more risk and confidence into the attacking third and I look forward to seeing him play in Claret & Blue.

Welcome.

Given how long it took Carlos to settle into PL football, it's a bit optimistic that Gil at 22 and been at Elche for two years can be expected to be our saviour. He looks like he needs building up physically and will come in for a lot of tough tackles I suspect, so unless he has the sort of skills to ride tackles, he'll take a plenty of stick from the cloggers of the Premiership.

Given Lambert's past experience of introducing new players, Gil might not even get much game time until next season in the championship.

I didn't say he's going to be our saviour and I don't expect that from such a young lad. What I said is that I look forward to seeing him playing for us. And yes, he's still unproven at this level but if he shows a bit of confidence when he does play, then he'll definitely help us getting a bit closer to the goal!

More than anything Gil needs to be allowed to remain the player we are buying. That his job is to get the ball from the likes of Sanchez and run at the defence. No defender likes that, and have that on both sides of the pitch it generally leads to good things. The defence if only asked to defend is more than good enough for this league. It's when they (that is the full backs esp.) are asked to provide the width that we look all over the place.

Possible team with Delph back

Subs: Gabby, Given, Baker, Cleverley, Cole, Weimann, Richardson

No, Lambert will play him too deep.

I like the look of that, TV. Hopefully Gil is Spanish enough to resist the influence of Lambert's stodge-ball for a bit, and give us more movement in attack.

He'll either sink or swim in that role.

Monty that system won't work with anyone except Benteke up front. By that I mean Gabby and Weimann are like statues. You give the right service to Benteke, not only will he capitalize but his movement alone will open up space for others to get in behind the defence. Ideally we would add a Dembele type player for Westwood also. The system essentially keeps the full backs as full backs not wing backs which is essential if you want the wingers to not have to worry too much about defending. Ash was superb with Bouma in behind him for example.

Yes, to your point, Lambert must allow Gil and Sinclair if he joins to be the players they are and dull their blades so to speak.

I'm not sure about a Dembele-type instead of Westwood - apart from the fact that Dembele is a better player all-round - because I like Westwood in a role which allows one of the other two midfielders to break forwards. Westwood is our most underrated player, I think.

Dembele for Cleverley would be lovely.

I did notice Gil looks able to take a corner.

I like Westwood too. I think he keeps things ticking over nicely. But I'd be in favour of upgrading where possible. That and the fact from the middle neither Delph or Westwood attack the box. Maybe Delph can become that player.

It is one of Westy or Cleverley and my vote goes to westy without a doubt. I do like the look of Toronto's side.
