Yes, they and Burnley were outstanding teams that year, else the great Vic Crowe might have managed consecutive promotions.

Just imagine, no Ron Saunders!!

Yes could have said "Best goal against us" as it says in the first post.

The thing about Vic missing out on promotion that season and being replaced by Ron makes me believe in the idiom that out of bad some good happens.

See also Small Heath actually manage to win a trophy but still end up relegated and skint almost immediately afterwards.

Paul Ince for West Ham near the end of the 88/89 season. He ran from half way in his own half took a few players on and then hit a 30 yarder into the top corner. The Holte applauded it probably because it was early in the game, it was to become the only goal though and we felll further towards the relegation zone. Thankfully West Ham went down instead of us.
was that the simod cup or whatever it was called- midweek game? Think I was at that one.

No it was a league game late in the season. Might have been a bank holiday.

I am pretty sure thehe Ince goal was on a Saturday. I was on the Holte on crutches after doing my knee ligaments playing football. They brought a load of away fans because it was Frank McAvennie's return/second debut after rejoining them from Celtic.

I would have said midweek. Young me recalls an evening with bugger all away fans there where he ran through half the team and cracked one in.

It was a Saturday, some part of my memory thinks Butler was in goal for us that day?

Definitely on a Saturday, although it was a bank Holiday weekend. We played QPR on the following Monday. And the away support was big as it was a relegation six pointer and they had just brought their golden boy back to the club. Butler was in goal that day. I can't actually recall us playing West Ham at home in midweek in my time going to Villa Park.

Yep, definitely a Saturday, as I'm sure the 88/89 season review video will show.

I'm trying to remember whose picture was on the front of that video and I think it was Mark Lillis.

No, wait, I think it was Rambo, actually, in his away shirt.

That rings a bell. Arms aloft celebrating a goal. Maybe at Arsenal or West Ham in one of the early season games?
