Whenever I hear of Leyton Orient I think of a 4-0 away defeat around 1972-3 when Ian Ross broke his leg. After that game I think Vic Crowe mandated the wearing of shinpads for Villa players. There was even a photo of Ross on the treatment table in the next home match programme (IIRC).

Ah, the classic old seventies football photo of an injured player with his leg in plaster. Usually holding a cup of tea in one hand and putting his thumb up to the camera with his other hand.

70s players also always looked at least ten years older than they actually were.

I got hooked on watching old 3-2-1 shows with Ted Rogers at midnight on Challenge TV a few weeks back. All of the contestants look middle aged but I realised a lot of them were probably in their twenties or early thirties. A lot of seventies footballers look older than me and I'm 43. I think moustaches and beards might have played some part in it. Apart from Movember the classic footballers moustache has died out. In fact moustaches in general have died out, although my dad still proudly flies the flag.

In about 1998 I ended up staying with my parents for a couple of months. My younger brother was still living there and the two of us developed exactly the same 3-2-1 thing, watching repeats on a Challenge style satellite channel till about 2am.

They obviously show random shows from different years but in the series with the round where two couples go head for a place in the final by playing that old TV console game (which is also given as a consolation prize to the losers) is fantastically mad. Was it called 'Pong' or something like that? My uncle had one and gave it to me one Christmas when he had got bored with it. Football, Tennis and Pelota! A choice of two speeds and big bats/players or small ones. I loved the one where Ted Rogers was describing all of the things that 'one of these new video recording machines' could do.

I have probably still got it in my parents loft! I would love to hide the PS4 and the two 3DS' and connect it up and see the kids reaction.

Sensible Soccer was amazing, playing in the El Savadorian 4th Division, or creating your own Cup competition with groups and knockouts and 128 teams in it.

Sensible Soccer, best football game ever. I still have a copy somewhere for the Mega Drive.

I have a 'Plug N Play' European version. I like the fact that it only has about 4 English teams in it, but Villa are one of those teams (after the 1992/93 season), along with Manure, Arse and Norwich.

On the contrary, there was nothing like trying to win the league in time to sell all of your best players and buy all the worst ones on football manager because the following season the best would become the worst and vice versa. Also trying to beat you own lap records at all of the F1 tracks on Chequered Flag. I could never master Jet Set f***ing Willy though. It wasn't called that, I just added the expletive because I am still bitter thirty years later.

I don't know what any of this means.

The first computer-related freebie I got was a disc game in 1993. The top teams on it were the Mancs, Villa, Norwich and Blackburn.
