Title: League Cup (Capital One Cup) Orient at home
Post by: ADVILLAFAN on August 13, 2014, 11:50:26 AM
The League Cup 2nd Round draw is tonight after the evening matches have finished (live on Sky). We should be seeded, so would imagine we'll get a League One or Two side.

Who do you want us to draw?

I'd prefer us to win by full-time. Avoids extra-time and penalties.

Walsall at VP.

The lowest team possible left in the Cup as they'll play their reserves.

We'll get Chesterfield away. It's the law that once you've done a ground for an irrelevant match you get sent back there immediately.

I'd like an away ground I haven't been to, someone like Leyton Orient away, as London is usually fun to go to.

Coventry at home would be interesting too.

I would go Coventry at home too. Bigger crowd and better atmosphere than most games against lower league opposition at this stage in the cup.

Must have been the 3-2 win at home against them, after trailing 2-0 at half-time. About 2001.

The 'O's have the best Supporters Club boozer in the country. Great Real Ales at very realistic prices. Then it is in the middle of nowhere and having a great pub in the ground is just as well. Getting home legless is another prob!

BBC have Villa, Blues and Albion all down for the Tuesday. I doubt that'll prove correct.

Sunderland have a game on the Sunday before the midweek cup games so, objectively, it might make more chance to have Small Heath vs Sunderland on Wednesday and Villa on Tuesday.

I prefer Wednesday games though so hope not.

My godson has my programme collection so can't even look them up from that source!

Looking forward to it in a "here we go again, lower level team with nothing to lose, they're bound to score at least one and the way things have been over the last few seasons the fu**ers'll beat us and create massive humiliating headlines in the morning" kinda way.

To be fair he didn't play the reserves last year, we were just cack when Sheffield United knocked us out.

They also had a bit of luck, scoring the only time they had possession in our half with a tame deflected effort.

I got hooked on watching old 3-2-1 shows with Ted Rogers at midnight on Challenge TV a few weeks back. All of the contestants look middle aged but I realised a lot of them were probably in their twenties or early thirties. A lot of seventies footballers look older than me and I'm 43. I think moustaches and beards might have played some part in it. Apart from Movember the classic footballers moustache has died out. In fact moustaches in general have died out, although my dad still proudly flies the flag.

They obviously show random shows from different years but in the series with the round where two couples go head for a place in the final by playing that old TV console game (which is also given as a consolation prize to the losers) is fantastically mad. Was it called 'Pong' or something like that? My uncle had one and gave it to me one Christmas when he had got bored with it. Football, Tennis and Pelota! A choice of two speeds and big bats/players or small ones. I loved the one where Ted Rogers was describing all of the things that 'one of these new video recording machines' could do.

Sensible Soccer was amazing, playing in the El Savadorian 4th Division, or creating your own Cup competition with groups and knockouts and 128 teams in it.

I have a 'Plug N Play' European version. I like the fact that it only has about 4 English teams in it, but Villa are one of those teams (after the 1992/93 season), along with Manure, Arse and Norwich.

On the contrary, there was nothing like trying to win the league in time to sell all of your best players and buy all the worst ones on football manager because the following season the best would become the worst and vice versa. Also trying to beat you own lap records at all of the F1 tracks on Chequered Flag. I could never master Jet Set f***ing Willy though. It wasn't called that, I just added the expletive because I am still bitter thirty years later.

The first computer-related freebie I got was a disc game in 1993. The top teams on it were the Mancs, Villa, Norwich and Blackburn.

Football Manager for the Spectrum was from 1982 and so the very limited choice of players tended to be from Villa, Liverpool and Ipswich. And possibly Glenn Hoddle. One school holiday afternoon me and two mates played together as chairman, manager and coach. Not a good idea. Lots of arguments.

I pity you. You will never know the joy of trying to beat your highest score on Jelly Monsters (Pac-Man rip off) on a Vic 20 computer. It was the only thing that kept me going Christmas '82 after I had been to the sty and watched Small Heath beat us 3-0. I only got one other game with it that Christmas and it was Jupiter Lander. Admittedly, you didn't miss out on much with that one.

Good draw for us at this stage.  Orient should still give us a few problems, and on a selfish note I would have liked it to be away as I am closer to London than Birmingham.  Am happy enough though and would like us to have a bit of a run to build confidence in the early months of the season.

If you don't stop being a cheeky young whippersnapper I will start lecturing you about party lines on the telephone (and trust me they were nothing like that sort of thing would be these days!), eight track cartridges and V2000 video recorders. And the rule about having an Irish mum meant the Brendan Shine LP had to be at the front of the record rack. Just in front of 'Arrival' by Abba.

With all due respect to Orient I don't think there will be a rush on to get tickets for this game.  Another problem with this being a mid-week game I would have to book a hotel in Birmingham too.

I'm in the cup scheme again this year so get tickets automatically. Bit of a pain having to remember to ring the ticket office yet again to get the cup scheme form for this season - you'd think they'd either include a form in the ST pack or automatically send you a form or a reminder if you were in it the previous season. Hey ho

In my opinion, there's no point in being in the cup scheme. You can't use the Villa Cash you accrue on away tickets, but you can use it on home cup games. So unless you're gonna be going to no away games, or spending loads of Villa Cash in the club shop, it works out better to opt out of the cup scheme and use the Villa Cash towards buying individual cup tickets.

Fair point but I keep my Villa Cash for tickets when my son's back in the UK over Christmas, so for me it makes sense to be in the scheme as I'd be going to the games anyway

Shame it isn't away as I'd liked to have gone there being a croydon boy soon.

Not sure I am happy about this Pete. Villa to win, but I hope the O's put up a good fight.
It's difficult this, the team I support against my old local team (only lived one mile from the ground) and the first team I ever saw live (in 1973, they beat West Brom 2-0 at Brisbane Road).

Just a heads up to people who renewed their Season Tickets over the phone and verbally signed up for the Cup Scheme.

Although I was told at the time that I would be put in the scheme, I have not.

Good job that I phoned up to check.

If anyone else signed up in the same way, it might be worth calling the TO.

..........however, one advantage of not being in the Cup Scheme is that I can use my Villa Cash to buy the ticket. This makes the game in effect free.

Yeah you have to ring and ask for a form, fill it in and send it back. I suggested to the ticket office that in future they include the form with the ST pack so people don't have to remember to ring and ask for it. We'll see....

Slight tangent, Leyton Orient was the second Villa game I ever went to, first being Fulham at Craven Cottage which we won 2-0 incidentally.
We lost the game at Brisbane Road 1-0, we did get an equaliser in the 94th minute, but a bit like that famous World Cup goal that was disallowed because the ref (Thomas) blew his whistle before the ball crossed the line, our equaliser was also ruled out.

Back on topic.
I do hope this gets treated with some respect and we field a decent side, I don't think I can bear another cup exit to a third tier team.

But surprised they're both playing at home on the same night, Baggies are on the Tuesday night.

Mind you, Blues will only get about 8000 people there probably, with half of them being Sunderland fans.
