Scotland may have been hammered in a game but I don't think you could put them in the class of San Marino.

Regardless of the respective quality of opposition, which is debatable, it is unarguable that teams play loads more matches nowadays.

Greaves' 44 goals in 57 games is more impressive than Rooney's 43 in 99.

Can't believe Rooney is only one goal away from Greave's record. He's always let us down in the big tournaments.

That's just the age we live in in all sports. How many players have scored more hundreds than Don Bradman now? But if you look closer at their stats you'll find that they've all played at least 2.5 times as many tests. The same goes in football - Rooney plays every game of the international calender, meaning getting 100 caps is a trivial matter for him. It's different times: more games, better fitness to play them all, exaggerated statistics.

Greaves did it in 57 appearances, and i'd imagine not too many were against the likes of San Marino.
Three against Luxembourg, ten goals across three thrashings of Northern Ireland, three against Scotland in a 9-3 win, three more in a 6-1 win against Norway.

I reckon that there were comparatively more hammerings of weak teams during that era rather than fewer.
Typical...using facts to spoil an argument! Anyway it's still 57v99 so he can never equal Greavies record.

I'd take Henderson off and get Ox or Sterling on.

This managing lark is piss easy.
I know you are almost SAF class but how did you manage to get two on for one off?

The word 'or' might be a clue.

So Andy Townsend reckons Wilshire was England's best player tonight. He said that just after the player himself, was too knackered to receive a simple pass and clumsily pulled the shirt of the opponent to get himself booked. I have to respectfully disagree with the cliche spouting, ex-Villa man.

I don't get the love in for Wilshere and never have, he's fine agianst poor sides that leave loads of space for him to pass into but as soon as a team defends the space in behind he looks lost and ends up pumping passes long into the stands or to the keeper.

Jimmy Greaves is the greatest living English forward. Rooney is a very good player but without the adulation that Greavsie had and still has.

People and the London media in particular get carried away with Wilshere but I think the opposite is true too that he gets more criticism than is warranted. I thought he played well tonight and the midfield rotation worked well (against a lowly ranked team). He's someone has a lot of potential but hasn't fulfilled it so far - not surprising with the injuries he's had.

He's yet to find a position in midfield that really suits him.  He's not really physically strong enough to play in a two man midfield and he isn't really suited to playing in a more advanced role.

He's a decent player. But he's not as good (yet) as the media try and make him out to be. And he isn't as bad as some make him out to be either.

I'd probably go for Lineker given his record in international tournaments.

Did anyone else notice the "AVFC Wirrall" flag at the England game last night?

Woolly-back Villans?

Woolly-back Villans?

Perhaps they were won over by the semi-final in 94?

Doubtful though, I went to uni with a Tranmere fan who was and still is very bitter about the Bosnich incident.
