I thought it was just an American thing.

I think it's used as a racial slur over there more, but i've sadly heard it used over here as well.

Must admit I'm quite surprised so many don't know it's used as a racial slur.

I agree.

Somebody saying it doesn't make them racist (obviously), and I saw nothing concerning in the original post but anybody who's completely unaware that it has some pretty unsavoury connotations must have led a relatively sheltered life.

I haven't led a sheltered life, far from it.  But I am not into rap music or pop culture so maybe I've missed something there.  I did hear something about Tiger Woods but never really understood what it was all about.

I've genuinely never heard of it, and my life has been about as far from sheltered as it's possible to get.  What are the unsavoury connotations?  I get the obvious ones, like bananas and watermelons, but fried chicken?  I guess it's popular in the southern states of the US, but why is it negatively assoicated with black people, and if it is, under what circumstances would somebody over here have heard it?  I don't recall any mentions in films or music for example.  Genuinely curious.

I find this quite surprising. It's as if British people started complaining that black people shout too much in movie theatres.

When does stereotyping become racist?  If they had been Italian players and he had mentioned spaghetti, would anybody have commented.

I wasn't offended by it and I'm getting pretty fed up with the amount of people who are crying PC brigade or suggesting that I was trying to be offended, that was never the point.  Like PWS I can't believe so many people have never heard of the racial stereotyping that it fits to.  I called it casual racism because I don't think it was ever intended to be offensive but some people will find it offensive in the context it was used and I was simply trying to point that out.  I never called Mark racist but I'm getting a bit pissed off that instead of just editing it or saying he didn't realise he's felt the need to play the victim (and ask for me to apologise) as if I'm the one who's caused offense.  In person if you said something and someone said "do you know that what you've just said could be taken as racist?" would you get all offended or would you just say "I never intended it that way and didn't realise it could be offensive but I'll remember that".

There isn't a person alive who will admit to having 'lived a sheltered life'. In the same way that everyone thinks they can laugh at themselves. Statistically is isn't possible.

I am allowed to say this: some of my best friends are imaginary.

See Mark, most of that I was ok with but why did you have to say 'fried chicken' you just seem to have decided to randomly slip in a bit of casual racism which really served no purpose.

I think you're reading something into it that's not there. A fair amount of my family are of similar ethnicity to these guys. Apology?

What difference does that make?

EDIT although having read it, it doesn't look racist to me.

But why would you say the conversation goes: we were at a successful club together, we're really rich, we can probably get cushy jobs afterwards, mmm chicken, we're both so fit, we'[re both rich ...

it just doesn't fit in with anything else that he said.  If someone can explain to me why it makes sense being there then I'll apologise for seeing something that wasn't there but I can't think of anything.

Well it just plain isn't, so make of it what you will. Where I live in Streatham all sorts of miscreants eat fried chicken of all colours.

Make of it what you will. It was light hearted and it seems a shame that you would throw around accusations that are so serious about me that aren't true.

I don't know you but it still hurts to have something like that said. Racism is foul if you knew me at all you wouldn't have said it.
whoa! You have different coloured fried chicken?

I don't think that's very funny.
