If you were Lambert and had spotted the next Benteke esque bargain transfer - and then Randy hands you 10m for the transisitional period to protect the (dimminshing) value of his asset, would you:

a) buy this star player without a moment's hesistation
b) sit on your knowledge of this player and ponder whether he good do a good job for celtic when given your P45 by the new owner and take the hotseat at Parkhead. Spend the 10m on another bunch of Tonevs, Lunas and Bacunas

Lambert needs to boost his profile as much as anyone so I think he'd try and sign the best players he can regardless.  I'd guess he'd be less inclined to sign youngsters however as his planning will be for the next 6-months/season rather than further into the future.  This might mean more aging loan signings which will make an instant impact - arguably what we've wanted anyway.

The bigger worry for me, is whether the next Benteke would join us because there is clearly going to be some change one way or another in the coming years.

If I were the next Benteke I would happily sign for the Villa. It puts me in the display window of the 'best league in the world'. The message would be, "Look at me, come and buy me."

Agreed, but the likelihood is that any player - if considered good enough - could choose from 10-15 Premiership clubs.  The uncertainty would put Villa well down that list even below traditionally smaller, less appealing clubs.

I disagree here to be honest. We're a team that's proven we're not afraid to give young players a run in the first team, even if they have shaky starts, giving them a consistent platform to get going in the league. Look at Benteke, Kozak, Bacuna, Luna, Bennett, Westwood as prime examples. They didn't exactly set the world alight in their first few appearances but have all played (bar Libor due to injury) a lot of games for the club. They don't want to be sat on the bench at Stoke or Newcastle.

On TBAR they're getting excited because a twitter account called - and I shit you not - @toptipsireland - has said Larry Ellison is the new owner.

That's an account with 500 followers which only ever tweets about horse racing.

That sounds TOTALLY KOSHER to me.

Ahh frankly, we will see what tomorrow brings.

I'm being dragged into Wales to see SWMBOs friends. Quite possibly reluctantly.

Sorry for nitpicking, but why would they fly into Doncaster?  Surely East Midlands would be the next best choice if Birmingham is a no go?   ;)

Lads, don't shoot the messenger but all the messengers have bubonic plague and should be shot on sight.
