I consider myself told.

Poor choice of words, I admit... I meant more like wait 20 years. It'll be a long season though before then... In fact, I'm hoping I don't have to sit through another 20 seasons of flacid turd before drinking them. If that's the case, they'll go a lot quicker!

Lads,

Heard the buyer is on his way over in the next few weeks which is promising.

Heard he wants a big marque signing to show rest league what we are all about.

Your cellar sounds like mine. I've got a rowing machine that my brother bought in 1988 down there.

Personally, I prefer Gigondas to Chateauneuf du Pape. I've got a few bottles of 2005 Santa Duc in my cellar and am waiting for them to come into season.

Also if you do visit the village, there's a very nice wine co-operative in the square where you can taste the majority of the producers from the village and purchase the wine at a very very good price.

In Chateauneuf Du Pape, you are greeted by an incredible arrogance and almost aggressive sales push that means you end up not being able to sample the same quantity as you would do in Gigondas. There is a place up on the hill though, not far from the Chateau where the chap speaks very good English and does a tasting of some of the best vintages from the last decade. That's your best bet.

In both cases, try and find local accommodation. Or you'll end up like I did - due to the zero tolerance of the French Drink Driving laws - sleeping in the car with a pissed off girlfriend!

Did the same last August and agree re the co/op. We got some St Cosme Le Crau and it wasps lovely. I tend to drink the southern Rhones fairly young as they are usually made for early drinking.

Now I agree on that - the Southern Rhone wines are better drunk earlier. However, with some spectacular vintages, it's worth keeping them for a little bit longer... which is really what I'm hoping to do. There's the old story about a Chateauneuf Du Pape being good from about 5 to 7 years and then worsening up to 12 before finally becoming good again.

Until about 2 years ago, I had no idea that wine could be so technical either. I just used to drink it and if I liked it, I drank more of it.

Now, I've just discovered that my Grandfather is good friends with the present owner of Chateau Leoville-Barton in Bordeaux. So, I'm trying to line up a week on the vineyard there, and will probably end up a very poor man as a result of it.

All this wine nonsense! You get all these wine people, don't you? Wine this, wine that. Let's have a bit of red, let's have a bit of white. Ooh, that's a snazzy bouquet. Oh, this smells of, I don't know, basil. Sometimes you just want to say, sod all this wine, just give me a pint of, mineral water.

Better than biscuit-related bollocks. Plus there is now a dedicated thread in OT.
