Whilst I am not a fan of Herbert if you don't want to wish him the best on a milestone brithday then maybe it is better not to post on this thread at all.

Personally, now he is not in charge any more I am entirely happy for him to live forever. Have a good one, Doug.

This is a happy birthday thread to a 90 yr old - not to drag up the past.

I look forward to your comments on 21 February, when cuddly old Robert Mugabe is also 90.

Similar to this, I had a bit of a set to with a colleague of mine who was suggesting those who attended 'Thatcher is Dead' parties were simply celebrating the death of an elderly lady, rather than the most prominent and politically divisive British political figure since the Second World War. It is done to suit an argument.

I'm not comparing Doug to Thatch, but the same mindset seems to be at work; they're old, lets forgive them for past misdeeds. Doug's name on this site was mud ten years ago, and anyone saying otherwise was rounded on pretty quickly.

History is a funny thing. Happy birthday, Doug.

Happy Birthday and thanks for destroying the Champions of Europe

Poor taste .
Many of us wish him less and like to remind people. As for bad taste-he ain't died or anything.

This is a happy birthday thread to a 90 yr old - not to drag up the past.

'Not to drag up the past' With Ellis in the title?  You're hoping aren't you?

If people are getting offended at a comment on a Birthday thread, they should take a look at the celebrity death watch thread.

Crikey.

Just a thought - surely when deciding how much the past matters, you need to take into account what actually happened in said past?

If you're talking about a dictatorial autocrat responsible for the deaths of many people (I'm talking about Mugabe rather than Thatcher, obviously), you're far less likely to ignore the past than you are if you're talking about someone who ran a football club?

You can't have a one-size-fits-all "forget the past" approach.

Bit of perspective needed, maybe?

With a lot of 'disagreements' though, you often use an exaggerated example to make a point.

I fully understand what Dave Javu is saying, without literally believing he thinks we should forgive Ellis just as much as the lovable rogue Mugabe.

My son just made me laugh.

"Doug Ellis is ninety today son".

"Alive ninety or dead ninety"?

Wow did someone really just compare Doug Ellis to Robert Mugabe? I've seen some pretty stupid and rancid stuff posted on this site before but that's up there with the best of it. I suggest maybe that person reads up on exactly what Robert Mugabe has done in his life and some of the amazingly heinous crimes he has committed by torturing, murdering and starving his own people. Even to use the comparison as a gross example of logical equivalence regarding judging peoples pasts is misguided and puerile at best.

Nope - Happy Birthday Herbert.

I don't think DJV is equating Mugabe with Ellis as a direct comparison, either. I just think it's so much of an exaggerated example, it has no bearing whatsoever on the person being discussed.
