I didn't renew this year.

The Mrs had, at that point, the threat of almost certain redundancy hanging over her, and things were a bit touch and go for me at work, too, so while we were having to cut back on lots of things, it seemed unfair of me to invest the hundreds of pounds in the season ticket, plus the rest of the money involved in going to 20 odd football matches a season.

Given how horrendous the year before was, and the fact it had given me pretty much zero entertainment, it wasn't a tough decision to make. I have only been down a few times this season, and don't really regret not renewing.

It is easy to get out of the habit of attending matches if you haven't paid for them all months and months in advance.

Bizarrely, if we are relegated, I too would go to more matches, as finally, we'd have a chance of winning some of them, and it could actually be an entertaining season, in which we get to play different sides.

They need to be super realistic with the prices, though, certainly no putting them up, and I'd expect them to cut them significantly. I bet they don't, though.

Exactly. It's the entertainment I want back at villa park. I'm bored at the moment every time I go

It's football that we're interested in, not the money.

I think that the lower down the league ladder you go, the more pure the football experience is. It's definitely about going to the pub with mates, talk football, go the match, have a pie, enjoy the game (hopefully) and go again. It's not the glitz and razzmatazz and 'experience' of the Premier League and it's football fans that go.

However, I'd rather that was the experience in the top division.

p.s. thanks Chris for the stats.

After missing most of 2012 due to health issues there is no way I'm going to voluntarily give it up now that I'm starting to improve. So I'll be another one supping Guinness in the Swan and Mitre next season.

No i will not be renewing - if relegation is confirmed. Come next August i will be knocking on the door of my 60th birthday and i will have been going down the Villa since 1961 call it 52/3 years and for 50 of them i have lapped up every minute of it. There are posts on here in regard to 'if it happens,i can see some different grounds'....Great for you youngsters i've done all that, there are a few i probably havent been to and that will remain. Some of the seasons late 60's and early 70's were absolutely fantastic, like many on here the third division days were possibly my favourite. I just do not enjoy it any more...on Tuesday night i shed tears, truthfully, because i left at half time - i have never been even close to doing that. I even had a row in the Upper Witton by the stair way to the exit with a lad in his late 20's early 30's who pleaded with me not to leave saying the club require our support, they do, but i just could not stay and watch any more. RL and to a lesser degree PL have ripped the heart out of me. I got through the exit turnstile and tears flowed....i'm a grown man who is basically falling out of love with the 'absolute' love of my life.....my house is a shrine to AVFC but currently i feel like ripping everything down and hiding it away in the garage.  I am distraught that i feel this way, cost has never been a factor in the past but it is now - i certainly think that the cost of a season ticket will not go down - and that isnt the deciding factor - i rely on a pension now but i know that i would go without a holiday or whatever to find the money for my season ticket....but i just feel that i just DON'T WANT to......that is what upsets me so much. When i left on Tuesday my heart wouldnt let me just go home i went to Swan & Mitre sat in my usual seat and waited for the end of the game and the return of the fans. There werent many 'Smiley happy people' among them. i sat there listening to their comments in virtual silence supping my Cider and caught the last train home to Selly Oak still in virtual silence. I just feel there is NO HOPE!!!!

There you go Randy - hope you read that. Even through all the Ellis years I doubt fans have felt so despondent as this wretched season. As the current custodian, Lerner is a disgrace to Aston Villa.

2 seasons without a season ticket, and I am much more excited about the idea of going down to game in the Champ, with a young side rebuilding the club that I have been recently. I believe, honestly, we have the nucleus of a really decent side at the minute, and with the right direction they can become a really good one. I will go down a lot more next season, and take my little one with me if the cost is right for the first time. Hopefully I can introduce him to it when we are winning!

The problem is that if you switch off fans of PGW's vintage, there are not enough younger fans coming through to replace them (not saying your replaceable mate) It's a tough sell to people my age (35) whose best memories are a couple of league cups 20 years ago, but the biggest problem is the lack of younger lads going down. It's not just Villa who are suffering in this way, most clubs are, but when you add that generational downturn to the economic depression in the region, and our rather unique fall from grace on the pitch, it's a big worry.

I feel for you mate, very sad indeed. What would it take to feel the love again or is that it?

You do know that the failure of our club and the fortunes of the Swan and Mitre go hand in hand.  I even said the same to the Landlady (Ann) on the Tuesday night.

The division we're in will affect attendances will affect number of customers going to the pub will affect their survival.  Ann had a concerned look on her face.  The pub only exists because of match day and your taste for cider, mine for the very good Guinness they serve.  You might well fall back in love with your club in time but your match day pub could well be gone by then.

I agree with what you are saying about the pub the fortunes of the Villa and the S&M go hand in hand. Over the last few years have got to know Ann very well indeed (and Chris by the way) i am generally one of the first in there and one of the last supporters to leave (22:33 train) well worse for wear.....i will miss those days as well.....i'm not saying i will NEVER go again but it will be a select few.

I recently found out that the Liverpool and Man City games had been moved. Which meant I could get to both, my reaction should have been that of joy.. but it was actually 'oh, for f**ks sake, do I have to go now!'.. I probably still won't attend one of the two and when it becomes a chore it's time to give it up until the love comes again which in time I hope it does. So after 8 years in the this Season Ticket block, it's a goodbye from me.

It doesn't make any different as I have lost the desire to go to Villa Park and watch football. I only went two games this season (Everton/Swansea) prefer to use money for salsa holidays aboard.

I want too, but the club don't show as much ambition as I do.
