Bloody hell, I understand Westwood and Baker struggling as their injuries are recent but the Vlaar thing is very odd.

Vlaar tweeted a few weeks ago he expected be back for the Liverpool game , so it doesn't seem to be improving much.

So none of this makes any sense. What's happened since then?

He got hit by a windmill when visiting family.

Very good.

I drove through Holland to Germany for the Hamburg game, and by god it is the most boring landscape I have seen! Apart from the odd windmill of course.

@MatKendrick: Agbonlahor, Bent and N'Zogbia could return to training today, but too early to know if they will be fit to face Ipswich tomorrow #avfc

We're ok upfront....it's defenders we need back and pronto! If not, we need to dip into the market NOW. FFS Lambert - 17 goals shipped in the last 4 matches!

Paul Lambert hopes Gabby Agbonlahor, Darren Bent and Charles N'Zogbia could play a part in the FA Cup third round tie against Ipswich.

Agbonlahor and Bent resumed training this week after missing the Christmas period with thigh and hamstring injuries respectively.

N'Zogbia, who has been out of action for three weeks with a knee problem, was hoping to join in with the rest of the squad in today's session at Bodymoor Heath.

Having the trio back would be a big boost for Lambert with a cup double-header against Ipswich and Bradford on the horizon.

However, Ashley Westwood is definitely out after injuring his ankle ligaments against Swansea, while Ron Vlaar and Richard Dunne remain on the casualty list.

Karim El Ahmadi linked up with Morocco on Sunday ahead of the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa.

"Ashley Westwood I think is going to struggle," said Lambert.

"The lads I've mentioned just there will hopefully come through this morning and will see how they are feeling.

"Hopefully we will get one or two back and that will help us. If we can try to change it then it's something I'll try to do.

"Charles N'Zogbia is doing ok and hopefully will be able to train today. Ron Vlaar is still struggling.

"Richard is doing really fine. There are no ill effects from the operation but he's still way short from training."

It wouldn't surprise me if the club knew immediately that Vlaar would be out for months, but hid it from us like they have to keep us happy and from turning on Lambert. Vlaar was his big signing and his injury record was a concern for many of us.

Just looked online, and his injury history is horrendous which I didn't realise at the time.  It makes the decision not to get another central defender in the summer even more bonkers.

Until he starts playing like Laursen, no. No we don't.
It's a worry though. We really need an experienced centre half at the moment. Vlaar and Dunne have spent too much time out injured. If we can get Lescott in quickly (not that he's been injury free by any stretch) then we'll be stronger.

As for Baker, have you ever known such an injury prone player at his age?  On the AVFC site yesterday he says he could have played rugby.  I'm sure he could, he would only have lasted one tackle where by the result of which would be the same as what happens to a toughened glass windscreen when a stone hits it.

He's a committed defender and those will always pick up an injury or two, James Collins was the same. Pretty sure in the first couple of games Baker played for us, he came off concussed twice!

I remember when Vlaar came off against Arsenal, people thought we might see him back for the Reading game on the Tuesday or the QPR game the following Saturday. Probably seemed wildly optimistic but big concern he's been out so long now.

I'm pretty sure Lambert did say he was in light training away from the group last week so maybe he could be thrown in against Southampton seeing as Gabby, N'zogbia and Bent all started today after weeks on the sidelines.

Any news on Darren Bent? He picked up an injury at Bradford so is he  be available against Southampton?
