Pat Murphy said we've paid £2m for Sylla, who's a six-foot, very physical DCM, and that there's at least one other "iron in the fire." Let's hope so, but it's good news at last!

Excellent news.
Proves PL's got money to spend and if he's anything like Benteke in his impact on the team, he will be terrific.

He may well be, but I just can't help having reservations.  Many were calling for the signing of experienced players in the summer and it could be argued that the failure to do that has landed us in this mess.  I hope we aren't going to make the same mistake this time round, as we are in a position where we simply can't afford to get it wrong.

Frankly I'm just very pleased that we appear to have got a player others wanted (see previous page) and who looks as if he could bolster the team. There are no guarantees, as you say, but I referenced Benteke as an example of the calibre of player we could get if we scouted them and he has turned out to be a good 'un, despite his age. Hope he is in a nice hotel!

Interested now in the iron in the fire.

We have signed Lowton, Bennett, Bowery, Westwood and Stephens from lower leagues.  At least Lambert is being consistent.   Consistently failing too of course.

Stephens?

Westwood certainly has the potential to make it in the Premier League, whether he will after the experience he has gone through this season is difficult to say.

However he has had a  injury rest so physically he should be fine its the mental scars that I worry about.

I think the problem is less Lambert's signings, more that the experienced players (Gabby, N'Zogbia, Bent, Ireland) have not stepped up to the mark and that too much belief has been given the existing young players (Bannan, Herd, Lichaj, Clark). Bannan, Clark and Lichaj are a bigger problem for me than Westwood, Lowton or Vlaar.

Lambert's signed some decent young players. Westwood and Lowton both look really promising (the latter reminds me a bit of a young Mark Delaney), and Benteke (only just gone 22) is awesome. Only Bennett looks iffy but you can see he has technique from his attacking play - he just needs to learn to defend, but I've seen plenty of young full-backs over the years who have started out shite at defending and ended up turning into very handy players.

The only problem is they are all first choice players in a relegation battle, and there's nowhere to hide.

Sometimes just the fact there are new players can give everyone a lift.
