I realise that Gaskell is a journo but are we really going to believe that he has some magic quotes directly from Lambert that nobody, including Kendrick who follows Villa for a living has got. I don't see those quotes anywhere else and in fact it is almost the opposite of what Lambert has been saying today. That he sees what we see and he doesn't need to pick up a paper to know the problems that we've got. How that translates now into Ivan Gaskell having an exclusive on Villa's spending is beyond me. And on Lescott, Lambert himself only a week or so back had the chance to complete dismiss the link and didn't.

On the subject of incoming players, the manager stated that after spending £23 million last January, the club have decided not to spend now.

He said: “That’s the decision I’ve made. The football club has been in relegation battles for the last few years. This isn’t just new on them because they’ve been in it for a few years. It’s something we are trying to rectify in a different way and we will still go that way.”

Clearly the idea of spending to get away from the drop zone is out of the question for the former Norwich City manager who also spoke about the current crop of players, adding: “We fight and we keep going. I’m not going to beat them with a rod. You have to pick them up.”

I assume they meant spending £23m in the summer because we didn't spend £23m last January did we?

If thats correct then get the numpty out the club now.

maybe a missing "since" between million and last?

You're right, this Gaskell bloke has written the opposite to what Lambert has come out and said. Best to be ignored in future i think if that's the way he's going to work.

The silence from the boardroom is deafening but the message seems to be coming across loud and clear. We have no money and we are not prepared to speculate to stay in the Premier League.  Madness.  Fail tomorrow and I fancy chants of "Lerner Out" rather than "Lambert Out".  I wonder if Lerner will even be there.

I've watched the lambert press conference and he did not say he had money to spend , I think the players he's targeted may be loan deals and then perhaps depending on whether we can finance the wages ?

Anyway time for a few drinks , enjoy your evening all and lets hope for a win tomorrow !

He said: "Do I have the patience of the chairman? You would certainly like to think so. I can't influence anything like that.

"I can only work with what I have, and that is the same for any manager. You try to do your job the best you can.

We don't do deals in public. We got out of our way to avoid any leaks and it's only people at airports or fans with camera phones that are opportunist that leak stories. Even this years kit was a complete secret. Just because nobody is saying anything doesn't mean at all, especially with this club that nothing is happening.

Precisely. Not a dickie bird from faulkner, though if lambert's really stupid enough to think we can stay up with the present squad, well its his funeral. Only a complete YES man would look at our squad and think it had more than a 50-50 chance of staying up

I would'nt give it as high as 50-50 no activity will equal relegation and they will need a bigger calculator to work out the real cost of that

In the summer, PL bought Concrete Ron and he, I think, was meant to be a captain and lead the defence.  He did that while he was playing, then got injured. There was short-term cover for him in the squad, although I don't think Lambert was expecting him to be out for this long, though.

It's good news that Vlaar is on his way back but he's a couple of weeks off, yet.

I can't help thinking what has happened has got to have affected PL's plans for this transfer window.  He's been looking at players and lining them up (I hope) on the grounds of improving the midfield.  But now, instead of looking just at revitalizing the midfield, for instance, he may be thinking, 'I need to find another major defensive player to lead the younger players.' But then, he's stuck with Vlaar as well and has 2 'captains'. It's going to cut into his team-building plans as well as playing merry hell with his budgeting, no matter how much money he's got.

So he's left with either buying somebody who wasn't on his original radar or hoping that Clark can hang on another couple of weeks until Vlaar comes back.

I'm in the 'speculation' bit of the thread title.

If Lambert manages to keep us up with no new additions to the current team, then I'll have to admit he's a much better manager than I currently believe him to be.

That would be nothing short of miraculous.

"I can only work with what I have, and that is the same for any manager. You try to do your job the best you can.

Other Lambert quotes:

"There's one or two lads that we'll try and get in but a lot does get dictated by finances. I understand the finances of it and this club cannot go bust or into major debt, it's got to watch itself and it's something I'll meet head on"

Also when asked about signing player for the sake of it that may not be in the long term plans he said "It'll just keep putting this club backwards if you keep doing that".

Seems like there's very little to spend but he obviously accepts it and sounds like he's here for the long haul, any other manager would have done one by now if that wasn't the case surely? I doubt we'll see many more high profile big money earners coming in anytime soon, my guess would be Lerner's given him assurances about his job for the future and is happy to let him build his team over a long period.

It must be a bit of a hostage to fortune having said sometning like that and then being hit with long-term injuries to key players!
