Why is everybody so eager to see the back of Bent, the one player we have who is guaranteed to score goals for us?

I have no idea. I'll be glad to see him back in contention.

I wouldn't say he's guaranteed to score goals for us, as we play a system that doesn't suit him
And without wanting to go over old ground, if we have a striker who has scored a f*ckload of goals at his other clubs (and in his first year or so with us), maybe we should think about playing a system where we might score occasionally.

If our new system were generating stacks of goals then I'd no problem leaving him out. But as it's not, maybe it's time to start using the tools at our disposal.

DO we have the players to do so? I think 4-4-2 with Bent and Benteke would work well personally, but you need good wide men that work hard and a real pair of centre mids that can work their arses off. And drop Gabby again.

I like Bent, and hope he stays and scores again like he did before, but it will take a lot of service to do so.

You are right, if you are weak in centre mid, and we are angel dellight weight, its pretty difficult to open up space by playing wingers.

I'm not sure Bent's goals ever came from a 442 system, most I remember i.e. at sunderland and Charlton was when the team played counter attacking, longish football and Bent played off the shoulder of the CB.

It worries me that Lambert is changing too much too soon. If N'Zogbia, Given, Dunne, Warnock and Hutton were all to leave in Jan to to be replaced by a load of 22 year-olds untried in the Premier League I'd be pretty pissed off. We would have fuck-all left in terms of experience.
Erm, we had this "experience" last year and we nearly got bummed down to the league below.  At least we are playing some good stuff now, and enjoying going to the game, and the threat of actually getting a result.

thing is are we threatening getting a result....... even at 2-0 up against a shit Utd side i sat in the holte just knowing that we would lose 3-2...... absolutely fucking schoolboy IMO........ there is no threat of winning a game, I think were as bad as we have been in many years......

Oh, at least we tip tap it about a bit..... if this is the right way, id fucking hate to see the wrong way !!

Dave is spot on.
It's time to look at a system that will bring the best out of Bent.

We do need Bent in the team and scoring, no doubt.

If at 2-0 up and with us playing well you sat in the Holte 'Knowing we would lose' ? I think maybe you should stop going, adbo.
Personally, I was in dreamland along with 30,000+ other Villa fans.
I don't think it was a s**t Utd team, a couple of players short of full strength, maybe, but certainly not s**t.
Unfortunately, they had a couple of lucky breaks and they were back in the game.

Disagree.
Unless you're suggesting we go and re-buy Young and Downing, or players of similar ilk, of course.
But, then you'd have the problem of Benteke. With a couple of players like Young and Downing I think he'd score for fun, and he can create for himself. Benteke has more to offer.
I don't think they would complement each other in the team, so, it's one or the other, and I know which one I, and, probably, the vast majority would opt for.

How did he manage to score so many at Charlton then with Darren Ambrose, Matt Holland and Radostin Kishishev being his main supply line, or at Sunderland when he had Frazier Campbell, Jordan Henderson and Bolo Zenden?

It's not like it was Stanley Matthews pinging crosses in for him.

It's an interesting situation with Bent, he's clearly our most likely source of goals but it does tend to limit the effectiveness of strikers who play alongside him and has done throughout his career. The conundrum for Lambert is whether he wants to build his side around him or would prefer to bring in players to suit the way he wants us to play.

It is, on the surface, a bizarre state of affairs. A current (well, when not injured) England pick, with a scoring record which compares very well to the best of strikers in the league, who we paid a fortune for not too long ago, and who can't get a came in a team that is struggling.

The really confusing thing is that the fact he can't get a game is entirely understandable, although to outsiders who don't follow us so closely, it must seem nuts.

I'd rather we found a way to play with Bent in the side, but if Lambert can't see a way of doing it and wants to move him on, then fair enough, it's understandable. We must then use the money to bring some experience into the side where we need it most, though.

Nothing to lose playing bent with benteke and leaving either Weimann or gabby out- it must be worth giving them a run together.

I can't believe people have mentioned Milner and Barry. FFS. Ridiculous.
