I don't get the question, do you mean unpopular whilst they were at the club and playing or at the point of them leaving ? If it's the latter - Downing, for that bloody photo with Carroll
And the Liverpool scarf

Savo ? Gobbing on the away fans yet retains cult legend status ? Weird one.

Judging by the OP, it would seem that the question is about players who are/were unpopular whilst playing for us. Rather then becoming unpopular on their departure.

One that hasn't been mentioned...Robert Pires. Wasn't exactly a fan favorite. Probably seen as too close to Houllier.

I was in the away end at Blackburn and I felt like gobbing on some of our fans for the vile abuse they were spouting.
Horrible day, horrible game.

I wasn't there so I'll never know the ins and outs of that day.
A rarity as im usually present at most catastrophes and on a beach somewhere for the major highs.

I figured I was a bad luck omen so I fucked off to Asia for 6 months, back in Sept. So far, we're not doing any better. I tried though.

maybe my memory is abit fuzzy,  but didn't Ken McNaught suffer as a unpopular player ?

ps: I still love that photo of Sir Brian slotting the winner vs Everton(1977) with McNaught in the background watching..

He was unpopular for about three seasons if me memory is correct. Ironically I recall it turning after the infamous W Ham FA cup defeat, when the fans sang his name before kick off at the next home game ( midweek 1-3 v Wolves IIRC)

Ken McNaught was very unpopular when he arrived as he had replaced a great clubman in Chris Nicholl. He suffered a very tough start, we had a new keeper in Jimmy Rimmer as well. I think he started to turn the fans on his side when he scored the two goals v Gornik Zabrze in UEFA Cup that season, but was not a favourite for some time.

I am sure I remember Saunders saying I signed the bloke he will come good. And I might be wrong but didn't Mc Naughton score two goals against  someone and the Mail (the Birmingham version) said that will pay for the fences ? in front of the Holte End
