I don't get the question, do you mean unpopular whilst they were at the club and playing or at the point of them leaving ? If it's the latter - Downing, for that bloody photo with CarrollAnd the Liverpool scarf Savo ? Gobbing on the away fans yet retains cult legend status ? Weird one.

I wasn't there so I'll never know the ins and outs of that day.A rarity as im usually present at most catastrophes and on a beach somewhere for the major highs.

I tried though.
maybe my memory is abit fuzzy, but didn't Ken McNaught suffer as a unpopular player ?ps: I still love that photo of Sir Brian slotting the winner vs Everton(1977) with McNaught in the background watching..UTVThe Doc

Ironically I recall it turning after the infamous W Ham FA cup defeat, when the fans sang his name before kick off at the next home game ( midweek 1-3 v Wolves IIRC)

Ken McNaught was very unpopular when he arrived as he had replaced a great clubman in Chris Nicholl. He suffered a very tough start, we had a new keeper in Jimmy Rimmer as well. I think he started to turn the fans on his side when he scored the two goals v Gornik Zabrze in UEFA Cup that season, but was not a favourite for some time.
