It's a pretty standard practice in the world of American sports.  Some of the bigger Colleges even have their own private jets to carry their sports teams around and will often use them to fly recruits in to visit the campus.

Albeit with Champions League football to look forward to, and if he plays his cards right a stepping stone to another club established in the Champions League.

First question, even in informal talks would be "how much will I have to spend?" so perhaps he didn't like the answer.
